I would have to say that somebody has already done some rearranging in your car. The factory speakers in all hardtop/t-top 3rd gens are 4x6 dash speakers, and 6x9 in the sail panels. - anyhow, pull the screw out of the close hanger hook on the rear side panels and pull up on them. This will unhook them and the holes for 6x9's should be there.

it came stock with the speakers in the trunk and kick panel.
when i take the hanger off and pull out the piece that it holds on, there is a solid piece of plastic, and behind it is solid sheet metal, no mounting holes or anything. do they sell some sort of mounting bracket?

My '87 Formula had a plastic enclosure with two speakers in it. This enclosure went into, and down a rectangular hole behind the sail panel. The hole wasn't large enough for a 6x9 so I had to cut away some sheet metal and mount them on a piece of fiberboard. I posted about this setup and no one responed that they had seen it before. Now we have one with NO hole in the sheetmetal! Has anyone else seen one of these two setups?

i have never heard of these methods before but i would be grateful if you posted the one where you don't cut the sheet metal.

No kidding... what kind of stock sound system was that??? Some kind of funky option? I can't see why GM would cut those 6x9 holes in a million Firebirds, and leave a couple hundred un-cut. Is that the real car body metal back there, or is it a plate covering up a hole?

Sounds to me like your car came equipped with the factory BOSE system. They don't have sail panel speakers.

When I puled the Bose kick panel speakers out of the the donor car I really didn't pay much attention to the sail panels since I already knew there were no speakers there.

There should be a hole ( a big square one) that an adapter plate that holds the 6X9 goes into. I'm not really sure though.

edit: Oh yeah, they don't have the dash speakers either.

you are correct 86irocz
there is an indentation in the sheetmetal but no holes to screw anything in to.

i am an idiot

i had just felt for holes in the sheetmetal, when i actually cut away the plastic there were holes for the speakers, just like everyone said.
they don't match the speakers at all but they are there. do they make a bracket to mount them or do i have to rig something so they fit?
