Need Flush mounting sterio information
Need Flush mounting sterio information
I have done a search but never found directions or instructions
on how to do a flush mount for the raidio and climate control.
I know you use wood and make the front plate but what do you
use to mount the sterio? Do you have to make your own brackets or what? Any info would be greatly appreciated.. The sterio place wants like $250.00 to do mine custom and switch the climate control and radio around... If I can do it my self I want to

Sorry bill, I had some info but I can't find it. One guy I know filled in the ceter with like bosaw wood and fiber glass resin making it flat across the front of the pod, then he cut the hole for the stereo I think.
sorry i can't be of more help.

someone doesnt seem to be too patient. there isnt much info on this because only a couple people have done this on here. i was in the middle of doing it myself, just havent had time to finish the job. one problem is the heating ducts at the bottom of the console becuase they get in the way. i had an old mounting kit that i butchered to make my setup. no pics, sorry. i know jim did it, dunno who else.
pennylessz28 thanks for the reply. I know people on here have done it and it just frusterates me they won't share their knowledge.. Neways I switched them around on my car but now I need a plate of some kind. I also just still am using the radio adaptor mounting peice which is not flush.. So I still have to figure that out to. Who knows I'll probably just take it to Sterio West for a custom install and pay like $300.00 or I'll just move stuff back to where it goes.. Getting tired of driving around with a tore up console and interior..
thanks

I don't know how flush you wanted it, but I just made my own mounting plate so it is significantly farther back than the one I had before. I suppose if you wanted it ever farther back you would have to use wood, but I just used plexiglass to make mine. I also had to cut the heating ducts inorder to get my headunit to fit. Here are some pictures:

This is the cut heating duct, roughly in the center of the picture.

The mounting plate. It is sprayed with truck bed liner spray to make it the same color/texture as other interior parts.

You can see here it is real close, but I don't know if that is what you consider "flush".

Side shot showing how far it sticks out.

Front shot of final results.
Hope that helps you out some.

Thanks for the pictures man! I see your trying to do the same thing I am thinking of. You have the cupholders where the ashtray used to be and by moving the sterio back it gives more room for the cups. I am taking it one step farther and switching the head unit and climate control around. like you see on new cars. My head unit has a rotating face plate and it always hits my cans that are in the cup holder...
I think you should mold a new front plate and that would look killer!
Here is a picture of them just switched around but now I need to figure out how to make new mounts to get these babies flush...
Exactly how did you make the mounting plate and how did you attatch it? From the picture it looks like a metal piece and then you just attached it to the innner console somehow??? Do you have a picture of the mounting plate before you put it in the console?

To make the mounting plate I just measured out a template using a piece of paper and kept cutting it until it fit on the inner console the way I wanted it to. Once that was done I used it to meausre out the piece of plexiglass I needed. I cut that up with a Dremel and attach it to the inner console directly with 4 screws. Those little metal pieces were in my car, but I know you can get them at Sears Hardware (most likely any hardware store). They are just like a 1 inch piece of metal bent in half with holes that match up. You slide them over the plastic so there are three holes all lined up (metal, the console, metal). They are there so the screws hold into them rather than the plastic of the console.
I hope that helps. If you still need a picture I will go take one (to lazy at the moment. Want to get back to Gran Turismo 3, heh).

On the cage that slides into the mounting plate I just have the little prongs bent up. I don't have any sort of bracket or anything supporting the back right now (which probably isn't a good thing). The hole in the mounting plate is rather tight though so it doesn't really need anything to hold it on, but the prongs are bent up to help keep it secure.
what thickness is that ABS? If its less than 1/4" that setup will not work, trust me. I've tried it.
After a couple of monthes the abs bends and flexes and then it will allow the head to move around with ease...
The best bet is to just get a piece of mdf, and using a router indent the area's that need to be indented and go from there. Follow the link in my sig, then go to the stereo link, at the bottom I have a how-to on how I did the panel on my monte carlo (it will be the EXACT same concept for the Camaro, just different depths and size). After you shape the mdf you can paint, vinyl it or whatever you feel like doing.

Bill,
I'm sorry I haven't returned your email on this subject, but let me see if I can offer some help here.
You can very easily do something similar to what o2sk8 has done and if you are concerned about the ABS not holding up over time then use plexiglass instead.
What I had actually done was took the back half of an old Metra kit (box without the face plate attached) and epoxy'd it to the back of a piece of black plexiglass. Then using backstraps (or plumbing straps work as well) secure these to the metra portion of your new kit and bend them so they line up with the factory mounting holes. Screw them in place and drop the factory trim over it and your set.
Here is a picture of the same kit mounted in my old Grand Prix...

That same kit bolted right up to the firebird housing with no problems.
Now to go one step further, in playing around with ideas, I made an overlay for the entire factory trim peice out of brushed aluminum laminated plastic. Cut this to the exact shape of the factory trim piece and cut the openings for a true rear mounted (flush mount) look that fits just around the face of the radio and open up the heater control areas.

Now with the Camaro it is even easier since your front trim plate bolts to the housing anyway. Just drill holes in the 4 corners, get some longer bolts and secure it through the factory trim to the radio pod.
Hope some of this helps.
Good luck.

Sheet......I just took off that bracket on the back of the radio pod. (the air conditioning one) . Just uncrew a couple screws. You can mount it way deep with that thing off (sure theres nothing holding it up in the back except the wires) and these other guys installs look better.

I guess I am not exactly sure how the Metro thing works... Do you have any pictures of it installed in the bird? You just use the housing of it and glue it to a custom panel?
Is that still using the Metro frame?? Do you think this is possible to do switching the climate control and sterio around?
