Convertible's speakers
I always hear of convertible's having stock 6X9's or something like that. Anyway, the other day I finally got around to chaning the quite blown rear speakers in my 'vert. Well, when I took the side panel off, I noticed that the speakers were small, maybe 5" round, and I'm pretty sure they're stock...they look cheap and like they've been blown for years. Anway, the side panels had only a half circle hole for the speaker, so the speaker was...how do I say this, half exposed on the inside of the car, and half covered by the side panel? I put the new 6" pioneer's I bought in that way, and it sounded like crap. They just hit the side panel and you could tell. I'm assuming the others did the same. Anyway, the point of this post, did all convertibles come with half circle openings in the rear for the speakers, or is mine just weird? I had to cut (don't yell at me) a circular hole in the panel a little higher then the other one was (the half circle was round at the top, then came down to the armrest thing, where the circle eneded...It followed the line of the armrest. The stock speaker coveres cover everything up though, so it doesn't look bad. I'm just confused...And I've probably confused everyone else too...

I don't know about the rear speakers but the 4X6's are very easy to replace. Just unscrew the six screws just under the lip of the dash pad and the four in the top middle dash pad air vent and pull the dash pad off, and there they are. Unscrew the speakers and replace.

Have an '88 vert and YES the panels have half a circle in them....when I bought the car someone had already swapped the speakers out for 6" 85 Watt Sony speakers....still sounds bad. Wanted to put some Pioneer 6x9's in there that I have sitting around and can't do it 'cause there's not enough room behind the panel....even if I mount the speakers on the outside of the panel and place grill over it...there is JUST NO frickin' room behind that panel....
Think about trying to put any sort of amp or subs in it.....tons of room (he said tongue in cheek)

i have an 88 iroc vert and its true, the sail panels only had 5" speakers coming through a semi circle cut out. When i replaced my speakers with blaupunkts i put in 6.5" and i cut the opening a little better and they seem to sound fine top up and down. the dash speakers are 4x6 and as stated are fairly simple to get out just be careful not to lose any of hte 6 screws into the vents otherwise you're gonna have some fun getting it out, i used a towel to cover up the vent so that nothing could fall down into it
