i don't think you understood me. all the boxes you see that aren't homemade have the screws hidden, but at the same time the box isn't wrapped in one giant piece of carpet. maybe not every side and piece of the box is wrapped but theres more than one piece. does this make anymore sense?

If you look at most of the pre-fab boxes, they have sunken sides to them. The piece that's sunk in doesn't have any screws on the face of it. Every other side is screwed into that piece. Does that make sense? So basically most boxes have 3 pices of carpet. One wraps around the box. The other 2 pieces go on the sunken ends.

If you know how to put the carpet down you can make it seamless. When I build square & wedge boxes, I wrap the box in 1 piece of carpet. I seam it on the bottom and seam it in a certain pattern on the side. If you cut the carpet straight & accurately, and push it together when you glue it down, the seam will not be visible.
i have another question: when the specs on a sub say it needs a certain volume of air in a sealed enclosure, can I just put it in a box with that volume in it, or do I have to take into account the basket on the sub?

Almost always you have to take the recommended volume and add the driver displacement to get the total air volume required. That's why the spec sheets have that info.
OK, I looked up the specs on the Infinity Kappa 120.3se and it says it needs exactly one cubic foot of volume in the box. I only have a vague idea of what most of the measurements in the pdf represent, and I'm pretty sure none of them are driver displacement. So am I good at 1 ft^3 ?
