cb and police scanner mounting ideas??

i do a lot of road trips and decided that i wanted to put a police scanner in and if theres anyway a cb so i can keep track of speed traps, wrecks and weather. But do to the limited mounting services, i would not like to cut or drill holes into the dash but the console is ok to cut up since i have to replace the plates anyways. does anybody have any ideas on where to mount???
any pics would be helpful
thanx

I use a Uniden PC68xl on road trips, which I mount under the dash on the passenger side, next to the stereo/HVAC controls. You have to lean to reach the controls, but usually it just sits on Ch. 19 anyways, and it has a self-adjusting squelch control. I mount the mic on the side of the center console, close to the passenger seat. When I am not on trips, I remove the radio, as it interferes with passenger leg room. Most of my trips were along Interstate 20, between SC and TX, so there was an abundance of trucks, and I never was pulled over on those trips. Never used a scanner, though.

when i had mine mounted in my old 86, it was too big to fit under the ac vents, so i just put it right next to where my knee would hit the side dash if i pushed it all the way over there... the mic squeezed perfectly between the dash and the cig lighter

messing with truckers is extreemly dumb! first of all, it's disrespectful to everyone trying to use the channels. if you know how to properly communicate over the radio, you won't need to do stupid things like harass truck drivers.

not to mention, the big CB antenna...clearly identifying your car. and if that's not enough, maybee they will know you are transmitting near by, simply by viewing a VSWR meter.

Exactly...some of your best friends on the road are truck drivers. They often know where cops like to hide along familiar stretches of interstate, they can better see the road ahead, due to their high seating position, and plus, it's nice to have people to talk to, cause it makes the time go faster, and it can help keep you awake and alert. I typically hear where cops are hiding over an hour before I actually reach the area in question, and they have saved me countless speeding tickets.

Finally...someone else who knows how to have fun in a Thirdgen I've got a Uniden CB and a Bearcat 750 scanner...I drilled two holes up into the vent above the radio/temp controls, and put the mounting bracket it. Two small holes in the right places in the plastic behind provided antenna cable and power for the CB, and I just took two metal strips with holes in them (whatever you call them) and went from the CB screws to the scanner screws (on the side). Looks VERY slick, and couldn't be better positioned as far as access and unused space. They're never in the way, and are SOOO useful on the road anywhere, never mind road trips. Although at first you may recoil at the thought of two radios there, I assure you they fit very nicely and are almost flush with the front of the vent. I'll try and get some pics for you. Also, as far as antenna mounting, I get EXCELLENT SWR with my 3' K40 (firestik-looking thing) on the driver's side of the tailgate - there's a 2" hole in one of the removable pieces of the tailgate from underneath that is perfect. Anyway, I've done LOTS of research regarding CBs, scanners, and Thirdgens, so please feel free to e-mail me at ChoirShortBus@hotmail.com with suggestions. Also, the Uniden I have (forgot the model number at the moment, should be in signature) is blackface, which makes it look even more factory

Keep the shiny side up and the dirty side down,

Gerry

Whats the price range for a complete cb radio setup? I wouldnt put one in my gta cause of the big antenna and I got my system for entertainment, but it would be perfect in my winter beater. Entertainment on my long snowboard road trips, warn me about the popo etc.

I'll try and get some pics up if I can acquire a digital camera...let me assure you it's tight looking.

As far as a complete CB setup, probably less than you would think. Good CB, properly "fixed" beyond the ridiculous and universally ignored FCC regulations: $40-$100 Antenna with coaxial cable: $20 or less Getting the 411 on the five-oh: Priceless. Find a CB shop in the area, check the phone book, and see what they have to offer.

As far as antenna mounting on our noble thirdgens, I know you are revolted at the very thought now, as was I before, but having installed a 3' antenna on the driver's side of my tailgate, it looks good. Again, I'll try and get some pics, and let you be the judge.

For the record, several late 2nd gen f-bodies came from the factory WITH CB antennas mounted following the release of the best movie of all time, Smokey and the Bandit. I rest my case

Any other questions I'll be more than happy to offer an answer to.

i have a friend that installs cbs, light racks, fog lights and other cool stuff... he told me he could install the antenna along the frame rail or somewhere under the car or he could even set up to run through the radio antenna...and he said the receptions was still good....do think i would get the reception???

Reception is ALL about antenna placement. The general rule is to have at least 2/3 of the antenna above the highest point in the vehicle. My 3' on the back hatch does wonders. Having the ENTIRE antenna below roofline, much less under the vehicle, smells fishy. Another thing to consider is ground plane. Antennas need a fairly large perpendicular metal surface to function well - the bigger, the better. The idea thirdgen antenna location is directly behind the t-tops on the roof, but having opted for the trunk, I sure am happy with the performance.

HOWEVER

I just wrote all that with CB in mind...scanner transmissions are often of higher power than CB, so you *might* be able to get away with it. The only issue I can think of is the large amount of engine noise, your biggest enemy, that you would have in the signal, being that close to the frame, etc. Our cars generate a fair amount of noise anyway, being hoss V8s with a rather who-cares-about-electical-noise ignition setup. ANYWAY, again, try it and see what you like...should be very expensive, so give it a whirl. You can always upgrade for the price of a tank of gas.

Hope this helps.

im not sure i want to waste the money if thats the case....i really dont want to drill holes into the body either...so i would have to go with a magnet or even a window mount i guess....
i guess whenever you get the chance post some pics...thats if you can get digital...

ive got a cb, originally Iw as going to mount it under my dash vents, but its too big, id recommend the side of the console, or in my cars, I have my rear seats out for my custom box so I mounted it on the custom box. Most people have rear seats so ya, be creative!

Another spot that I considered was directly above my right knee when I'm driving...you'd be surprised how a CB there, mounted on the underside of whatever that is, will NOT be in your way. Be creative...have fun.

One trick I know is if your CB has an external speaker jack use it.

Clip the wires to the speaker that is inside the cb and use the external speaker jack for a speaker.

why? it give you another 2-3 watts of broadcasting power, which is allot for a cb. its is kinda of illegal but not real bad when it comes to cb tricks. There are worse ones out there.
