ACCURATE bass, thank you...what sub? a.k.a. why did Circuit City's demo sound bad?
Alright, I went to Circuit City to hear some subs, and was shocked at the inaccuracy and downright crappy sound coming from the subs. They were amped, but didn't change the sound much. There was a pretty long delay between the time the bass sound should have come forth and when it actually did, and it was sort of like taking a jellyfish for a walk on a bungee cord...pull really hard when it's time to play, and after about 2/10 second, the thing splats against the wall. That's the best analogy I could come up with - sorry. The bass line was nearly unrecognizable. Oh, they did sound low - but there was ZERO accuracy. I've got an 8" sub on my Boston Acoustics setup on my PC - and the sound is dead accurate, doesn't stick out. My question is this; why did Circuit City's setup sound so bad? Is it possible for me to get truly accurate sounds in a vehicle or are subs universally thumpers instead of players? I'm a professional musician, and would really like my system to sound like an actual band, i. e. and bass drum and bass guitar, and not like an earthquake. Perhaps I'm just being a snob and need to get off it. I hope not. Here's my current setup.
Boston Acoustics 4x6 2-way
Pioneer 6x9 3-way (220 watt)
Kicker IX405D 5-channel amp - 40x4 RMS, and 290 watts on 2 ohms, 200 at 4 ohms for the sub.
Would I have to run 8's for the kind of sound I want? Would 10s still be tight enough? Were perhaps the subs there just underpowered? None of the subs looked very impressive.
I really appreciate your advice in advance. Have a good one.

Cause Circuit City sux. Go to ear-mart or car toyz. If you really want to hear something that will blow you mind go to guitar center or mars and ask to hear their best pro audio. OMG!!!!!! LOUD! CLEAR GOOD!!!! These are the speakers used to power Woodstock and **** like that. Or just pro recording for people who get pain 100 bucks an hour. You know what forget your bad experices and the krap store and go to guitar center. You can find the nearest one to you at guitarcenter.com

LOL...I saw that when I was there...if that was put into rice, it would easily at 300-450 hp, don't you think?
What you say makes perfect sense. Guitarcenter rules - I hope to be buying a Gibson SG from them pretty soon. I'm sure they would have decent audio.
SO - my question becomes thus. Is it possible to get accurate bass for a reasonable price? The lowest price Kicker 10" is around $50 at some places on the net...is that asking for trouble?
Thanks...
Gerry
P.S. Feel free to crack out. It's kathartic.

that $50 Kicker won't be killer accurate, but it will do VERY WELL if installed and tuned properly as with any sub. From what you explained it sounds like the circuit city boys had there subs in extremely crappy boxes (big suprise there....).
There are quite a few subs on the market that are known for tight accurate bass. Kickers do real well as do JL's, Image Dynamics, Adire Audio, Infinity Perfects, Crystal, and the list goes on.
I would look to spend a little more than $50 on your sub though. With speakers you really do get what you pay for 90% of the time (always exceptions). I would say look into spending no less than $150. For $150 you can get a very nice sub. Add another $200 to that for a good amp (I would say look into the Jbl 300/600.1; the JBL's pretty much destroy the competition when it comes to (watt/$$)*reliability).
*****Prices as retail, you can get a '$150' sub for less online, just beware, some companies will not warrent them*****

the ten incher that i have is pretty accurate (see sig) would be a lot better if i had it in a good box
only problem is the 300 doller price tag for the one ten inch
and the 450 price tag for the amp that i have going to it (still underpowerd)
i personally think that the aluminum series is extremelly good

Gibson SG:rockon: I just got my first SG, I've always played LP's...Any way the reason the subs sound like crap a Circuit city is probably because the enclosure is way to big for the sub.

Seeing as they're mounted on a wall for display, it would look like they are installed on that "wall" plate-style and so its open in the back, not to mention they're probably not separated from each other so you huge amount of space back there to do what a sub is supposed to do. Its the same thing with their regular speakers. They sound like *** on that wall display.
Okay, thanks for all the replies...well, they did have the subs in boxes, but I'd wager they're underpowered. They did look like rather large boxes, so that probably didn't help. Would I be able to get away with powering that cheap Kicker, or a lower-priced Kicker, 10" with the 290 watts from my amp? Thanks...
Yeah, SG rules...plays like BUTTER. I want it! Also, Musician's Friend has these cases that look like coffins...burgundy velour on the inside...SO tight!! Dead to sin, baby.

Yeah....I work for Circuit City, and the guys in the car audio department don't really like me, since I flat-out told them I wouldn't trust them to install an air freshener in my car. The sales guys there don't know what the hell they're talking about, and the installs they do are nothing less than total ****.

Ok, the box would make it sloppy, but in most cases wouldnt make it delayed. Im bettin on their setup either their head units signal, or the wiring along the way is phase reversed, therfore when the speaker recieves a positive signal, it pulls in and then firing out is in essence the "recoil", therefore making things "delayed" and also sloppier.
Yeah, well in any case, I think we've established that Circuit City is NOT in fact the mecca of car audio that the uneducated, like myself, may have originally not ruled out. I'll get myself to a reputable joint. Do all the larger electronics stores have similar reputations, so I should look for the smaller specialty, quality stores?
Boys, we are simply the picture of white trash. F-bodies, electric guitars...yeah baby. Please don't say y'all have ******s...
By the way, have y'all noticed that f-bodies seem to attract sketchy women?

Definitely try to go to the smaller high end stores, they usually carry a better product (eclipse, sound stream, mb quart), and have more knowledgeable sales reps. However their prices will reflect that, so ya gotta rememebr ya get what you pay for
