generally ported boxes work best for that kind of music.. an extremely simplistic way to think about it is that ported boxes pound a little harder, while sealed boxes have a little more sound quality..

I'd say go sealed...like Mudaholic said ported usually gives you "boomier" bass, usually good for an extra 3-4 dbs if you compete. Sealed is better for sound quality by far. You must always make sure the volume of the box is right for the sub or your sealed box could sound like ****. Alot of how your system sounds is in the box design. You say you listen to mostly rap/hip hop so ported would be your bet, but even with that little bit of metal you listen to I'd go with sealed. A sealed box will keep your subs tight and play those double bass hits of Metallica and Slipknot since u like the metal. That should help ya out. Good luck.

sorry, but by the way even if you go with sealed, your rap is gonna hit just as hard. Go sealed man.

theres a difference in how the bass sounds between sealed and ported. i explained it the best way i could, but you have to listen to the difference to understand it. sealed and ported do not sound the same, and consequently they will influence the way the music sounds as a whole. one's not "better" than the other, just different

Sealed if you are looking for more SQ, but you will need more power going sealed as well. Ported will generally be 3-4 bd's louder, and do it off less power. But, you loose SQ and compromise for more SPL. It will also depend on what driver you have, as some only prefer sealed enviroments.

ive sealed my MDF enclosure. But i also tried like 4 pairs of subs and 4 different types of setups...before i got the right one that i wanted. I tried Kenwood Tornado's, sony explodes, and rockfords..all with different setups either sealed or ported. I will say that they all sounded good....but didnt get my full appreciation like i wanted. Finnally went with a pair of pioneer 10s.....tried it ported....then sealed...and got it perfect.
