Why does this happen

my stock stereo on an 86 firebird ta fades in and out and so does the display???
i just recieved the car and am trying to get it going

Axle/Gears: 8.5", 3.42
Somewhere you're loosing voltage/power. Either a connections is loose, or the battery or alternator is going bad.

if everything else is working fine you most likely have a loose connection somewhere in the back of the headunit.

yea i am pretty sure its the alternator.... by the way how much are those things running now??

about 75 bucks for the alt. if the alt was dying , your car would cut off suddonly, all the time, like when you hit your brakes, or turn the stereo on, ..car wouldnt start at all ect ect, ...id say check the wiring/ ground.
