Hooking sub to home audio system?
I was wondering if it would hurt my sub to hook it up to my home audio system. I am running it through a 4 ohm reciever. the sub is a JL Audio 12 W3 if that matters.
I've hooked up boxed home speakers, with large woofers, and it sounds much better that stock if thats what your looking for...but I dont know if your head unit would have enough power for the home speaker sub...but i've never tried it before, and where the hell would you put it??
MoJoeVanilla, try reading his post again....
I have an Alpine 10" sub in a ported box, hooked to my home stereo receiver. It works just fine and it puts out A LOT of bass. More then any (cheap) home audio speaker ever will.
A friend of mine has a HUGE box with two 15" Kickers hooked up to his! Can you imagine how much bass he gets out of that setup ?!? A lot !!! lol

I've had two Blaupunkt 15's hooked up to my 300W home-audio amp, and I've also had two JL 10w0's hooked up to it, no problem, sounded great. It all depends on the setup though. Make sure you look at specs and things so you don't fry something.

ok thats what i want to do also, with only 1 15". the sub is like 600W and i just wanna hook it up to my 50W stereo (i duno if it is 50W but its probly not too high.) so when u hooked ur sub up to it did u just plug the wires into the back of ur amp? or did u need something else like some deely to convert 4ohms to 8ohm or something....i dont know very much about audio and cant explaine stuff worht **** as u can tell, so please bear/bare with me and help me...thanks
i have 2 12" 700 watt a piece subs hooked up to my aiwa bookshelf system and i have had them hooked up for over a year and they work fine and my stereo is still working. i have put them in a friends car to see if they still work with extra watts pushing them and they still sound fine. all i did to hook them up is splice the speaker wire and it works fine.
I got two rockford 15' in the living room hooked up to an ancient, but VERY high quality reciver (amplifier). It bumps them better then a 350S car amp, thats for sure.
so they're staying in my living room for now

Are you guys hooking the subs up to the regular spearker conections or plugging the subs in the sub spot on the reciver (like in the 5.1 surround sound set up). Beacause the 5.1 sub connection on my Sony reciver is a RCA plug not a speaker wire connection. Thats how a reg home audio sub would hook up (with the RCA plug).
I have hooked my rockford car subs to my home reciver and they are not that loud????

it depends if your receiver has a built-in amp. a lot of home audio subs are self-powered, and many receivers have the equivalent of a line-out subwoofer output, but some receivers also have an amplified subwoofer output. depends on what kind of setup you have, but there needs to be an amp in there somewhere, either in the receiver or separate.
I'm at work right now so I cant check, but I know my subwoofer connection on the reciver is a RCA plug not a speaker wire connection. Would that help knowing if my reciver has a built in amp?
most likely you dont have a subwoofer amp built in, in which case you would need to purchase a separate amp for your sub. that could turn in to a pain in the *** real quick.. might want to consider some other options
if you have a lot of leftover car audio stuff around and want to get some home use out of it, here's one suggestion that works very well for a friend of mine who bought his brother's camaro with giant subs and wanted them out of the car.
get a small car battery, or preferably a tractor/riding lawnmower battery (~$25). also get a 12V AUTOMATIC trickle charger. hook the charger and the amp to the battery. then just run your stereo's sub line output to the amp, and you should be good to go in most cases. the lawnmower battery will power his 350W JBL amp for at least 6 hours continuously without a charge, and about 10 hours or more with the charger on.
the battery will be charged overnight and any time you're not using the system. just turn the amp off when you're not using it to conserve power and charge quicker. the automatic charger prevents the charger from being overloaded and the battery from being overcharged.
DO THIS WITH A SEALED BATTERY ONLY. lead-acid batteries will vent hydrogen gas as they charge, which is highly flammable.
