How do I install a CD Player in a 1985 Berlinetta Camaro?
How do I install a CD Player in a 1985 Berlinetta Camaro?
I have read that some people have had to change out the entire dash makeup with another style camaro such as an IROC-Z28. The way the dash is, and the piece of crap tape deck being in there like that I dont see how it will be an easy thing or cheap thing to do. Any ideas?
And I would rather not use the crap tape deck with a CD changer... I dont want it in the car at all.

Are you talking about the one thats on a pod??? If so i thought that 1983 was the only year they did that. I dunno, if so ... heres a pic.
This guys TGO name is "JOHN IN RI". He took a standard cd mount kit, turned it upside down and installed it like that.

Cheaper option
there is a cheaper easier way! I wish i could show u but my 85 berlinetta is in VA. AND IM NOT. lol. well first u remove the radio and the brain .. ( pull out the radio then remove the console panels.. this will reveal the brain) Then u simply take the back peice the on the curves with nothing in it and u measure and cut it to fit a cd deck and then install your cage and slid in the stereo. i will try to get some pics . i doesnt cost anything but a wiring harness for ur deck and a good ol hack saw!!! ask me any questions if u dont understand!
Heres how I did mine...It looks exactly like John In RI's. But I took mine one step farther and installed cupholders on top of mine.
1. Go to Crutchfield.com, order this: http://www.crutchfield.com/S-ZjtKeLr...sp?i=120999000
2. While your waiting for it to arrive, go to your local Wal-Mart and get the Scosche adaptor for GM vehicles. I'm not sure which one it is, but it says "For older GM vehicles" or something to that effect on it. THis will make installation MUCH easier. Also pick up a set of butt connectors.
3. Day before arrival, go out and begin de-installing your existing Berlinetta radio from the car. It will require a Torx star set, I think size 7. Unscrew your shifter plate, and the curved plate behind the radio. Make sure to keep your cruise switch if you have one.
4. It'll take alittle work and a few cuss words, but begin to remove the pod and brain from the car. All it requires is removing the bolts and not breaking anything but that gay *** radio in the process. If I remember correctly it makes it easier if you pull up on the pod and twist it around backwards.
5. As you are unplugging the brain, connect the power and speaker wires to the GM wiring harness I told you to buy. It should fit. I didnt do this step because I thought the connectors were different on the Berlinetta. But they're the same so go ahead and buy. That way you don't have to cut your factory wiring.
7. Now, take the curved plate, and a Dremel. (A good tool to have). Place the headunit up to the curved part and mark off a DIN sized box on there. Now the fun begins. Take the dremel and cut out the box. Make sure your headunit slides through easily.
6. Next day, you'll get a nice large box from Crutchfield containing a Metra underdash kit. Now, your gonna need your dremel and a hacksaw/jigsaw. Take the hack/jigsaw and cut the back off the bracket. Dont' shave too much off. Check it in your car first, and get it to seat good. Now, take the Dremel and make it perfect. I got mine cut so everything connects up to the dash perfectly and it looks factory.
8. Take those butt connectors and a set of pliers and begin crimping the GM harness to your headunits wiring harness. Plug the headunit in and test everything. Does everything work? Good. Unplug your headunit.
9. Install the head unit cage into the Metra bracket. Slide head unit in. Make sure the fit is tight and it doesnt slide easily.
10. Your gonna need a drill. Take it, plug the headunit into the harness and fit the bracket to your console, and start screwing. Get as many screws in it as you can. Congrats! You've just gotten rid of the gay pod radio and increased your sound systems integrity tenfold. Enjoy the crystal quality sound. Be sure and get rid of those stock speakers for at least some cheap Pioneer's. Or go ***** to the wall. Whatever you wanna do. If you plan on installing amps anytime soon, I reccomend running your RCA's at the time of installation. Will make things much easier. Just hide them under your seat until amp installation.

Just to clear things up --- that's not my radio !!!
I took that picture of a freinds car when he brought it to me so I could install a new dash cluster in it. Since MANY people have asked me about swapping the berlinetta radio out for an aftermarket deck - I took pictures of his set-up to show people how it's done !
Being a true Berlinetta connoisseur ------> I will NEVER pull the factory Berlinetta deck out of my car.
It was better for me to upgrade the existing post-mounted system with a CD Changer in the hatch and a custom 8-way BOSE Gold speaker system. My set-up looks completely stock but will shake the mirrors on the car in line behind me ! Plus - I have the added benefit of being able to play Cassettes or CD's.......

This is the best way. Go to car tunes, leave your car there, go to the movies and lunch with your favorite girl, go back to car tunes, pay the small install fee, drive off knowing professionals did your car correctly and knowing you can take it back, for free, if it wasn't done right.
