Help please! 4x6's too deep for front

I bought a pair of Polk GXR 4x6 2 ways to go up front...now that I have the dash pad off and the old ones out, I see the Polks are about 1/4 - 3/8 of an inch too deep to fit flush in the bracket. If I shim underneath the speaker to take up the space, do ya think I'll have trouble getting the pad to fit back on right? If the magnet rests on the plastic piece underneath, will it affect the sound quality? Or...does anyone know what speakers would be a good quality and fit right in there? Appreciate your help guys...

It'll be a tight fit, but you'll get a nice seal against the pad. Mine are set up with a 3/4" plywood adapter.. basically an oval cutout.. takes alot of time to get it to fit right, but it's worth it. 360* seal. A little too thick, though, 1/2" would prolly leave good clearance without causing the pad to deflect. No 4x6"s I know of should have an excursion capable of the dash pad interfering with them, so no worries there. Make sure it won't crush your tweeter dome tho.

locate what they're hitting, and figure out if you can cut it out of the way, if you can heat it and push it out of the way, or if you need to clearance the dash pad. I've never had a problem fitting speakers into an 82-89 camaro dash. My Boston plates have a huge, offset magnet and they still fit. In the firebird, well that's another story. That requires some work.

You might have to dremmel out the bottom a little bit, if its anything like my 92 was, im not sure i've never seen under the dash pad of 82-90.. But I know when I installed my Clarion 4x6's they were too deep and we had to dremmel the drivers side out so they'd drop in although the pass. side fit nicely.

Thanks for the help and the suggestions. I ended up making wood spacers to fit under the speakers; lifted the driver's side 3/8 and the passenger's 1/4. No clearance problems fitting under the dash pad. Thanks again for the replies.
