Anybody ever installed an EQ in the radio pod?
Anybody ever installed an EQ in the radio pod?
... or anywhere else for that matter? I just picked up a ten band EQ that is about an inch tall by seven inches wide by five inches deep and I need someplace to put it. I was hoping to fit it in above or below my headunit, but just wanted to see what y'all thought first.

Is it a half DiN EQ? I had one mounted WITH my Head unit, but it looked like ***. The mounting kit that allows for a Din + half DIN unit looks like ****. I dont have a full picture, but im pretty sure you can see a bot of it on the page with the MacEwen gauges on my site.

I had one mounted, a lonng time ago. It was a Sherwood, 1" tall by 7" wide. Mounted it using one of those combo kits that held a radio and an EQ. It looked great in my opinion, always got compliments on it. Maybe the difference was that I mounted it below the radio, and not above it?
I did some "rigging" of the back of the kit to make it secure. I used the strapping included with my radio to bolt the back of the EQ to the back of the radio. The other end of the strap got bolted to the floor. If a theif was going after my radio, I wasn't going to make it easy for 'em!
But other than my theft-proofing, it was an easy install.

Okay, thanks guys - Admrlam, if you get the chance, post some pix - you too Tom, I'd like to check out the look of that kit prior to buying yet another one. Was it one of those "off the shelf" type that you can buy from Circuit City/Audio Specialty shops; did you order it from somewhere... Need info...
I've actually considered mounting mine in the overhead console, or in the center console, but I'm not sure I feel like doing either of those - so any other suggestions are appreciated.
Thanks gents!

i had an eq mounted under my head unit like tom. it was an off the shelf kit, dont remember who makes it though. might be metra, they make some of the best
. i thought it looked good too. only reason i dont still use it is because it got messed up when my car got broken into and have all of its features (7-band, dual source) built into my new head. i dont have any pics (i dont think), but you could check out my sig.

You mean something like this? This is my old setup which is now gone. The trim panel fit on fine, it was off b/c I was about to rip things apart. I did have to cut and sand/file the install kit a little to make the eq fit properly but all in all it was pretty easy.

Steve, i DID put on in the armrest console of my daily driver, and that works much better. It looks nicer, because its surrounded by carpet under the armrest, and the deck doesnt look so cumbersome with the mounting kit and EQ. Id take some pics, but no digi cam

Thanks a bunch for the responses fellas - I already had the combo faceplate thingy from the universal install kit so I went ahead with my hour project to install it.
*AHEM*
I should have known better. What started out simple became a horror show as I couldn't fully seat the HU. So I had to take out the brand new radio pod and cut out some of the plastic. Easy day, right? Nope. Frickin' fourth gen console is in the way, that has to be removed just to get the radio pod out. *sigh* Fine. Out it comes. Remove radio pod, cut, reinstall. Install HU and EQ - SUHWEET! Put console back in but as I'm doing that I notice this nice black wire that is just dangling there... It's got that attitude like, "HEY - CHECK ME OUT!!"
That wouldn't be the... no... it couldn't... Yep. Frickin' antenna wire is hanging out down below; ie "not installed". !#$@! Out comes console, out comes HU, in goes wire. Grrrrr....
Back goes the HU/EQ. Back goes the console. Now for the trim plate... What the...?? Somebody... I'm gonna... Trim plate doesn't seem to fit. WTF! It's the same size as the @#@%$#%%^%$& OTHER PLATE!!! Remove screws holding the plastic "cage" to the radio pod. Install trim plate. Breathe sigh of relief. Finish up console install.
Put tools away. Pat self on back. Prep to head out for dinner. Go to roll up windows. Window switches aren't working. FVCK ME!! Forgot to hook 'em back up.
OUT COMES THE CONSOLE...!
Jeeeeezuz. A simple hour gig turns into a frickin two and a half hour horror show.
Anyway. After cooling off, I snapped a pic. I'm happy.
Least, I'd better be because none of that **** is coming back out.

Where's Jim? I've got a corollary to his "weekend projects AREN'T" sig... Something like "hour long projects AREN'T"...

Welcome to the anxiety level of car audio.
I used to do the SAME STUFF!!! I always "got my underwear in a bunch" as my mom said. Always listening to hear her say "Take your time. Think about what you're doing" BLAH BLAH BLAH
Now that I'm older (31) and wiser, guess what I'm always telling the younger guys in my car club????
It's still difficult though. You get new equipment and "I WANNA HEAR IT NOW!!!" You just gotta learn to
ssslllloooowwww dowwwwwnnn.
Last weekend I had to take everything out to change my heater core. (Not fun
) It took me ~8 hours, but I didn't break anything (that belonged in the car anyway
) and everything works.
Well ALMOST everything. The socket for the light behind my heater control panel broke and won't stay in the hole, and I lost the light bulb for the shifter, but other than that.... everything went OK.

Looks hot, Scauffiel! Nice job! I know how you feel about the radio install... a buddy of mine was joking with me about how long it was taking me to put the same head unit in that he did (in his Cavalier). Then he saw all the braces and bracketry I was messing with - the moron before me cut out the rear radio support - and told me if that was his car, he would've taken it somewhere to be put in.
Hell, my rear support even bolts to the floor. And you got it; to get to the floor, I have to remove the center console.

Yeah, that rear radio support is a P.I.T.A. when it comes to the dash kits. I wanted to have my cd player recessed...no particular reason, just didn't want it to stick out...but the damn bracket was in the way!

heck, i just removed the rear bar thats in the console. never had any problems and allows for more depth, especially if you are trying to take advantage of the whole 1.5 din opening

Hm, so you're one of the guys I curse at when I find a radio console in a junkyard with the rear support bracket cut out? Damn I hate that.
Yeah, I had the same problem with the car I have now.
Fortunately, the center console and all the parts from my parts car fit perfect.
I curse those that take out the rear bracket AND cut off the stock harness so they can hardwire their stereo. ROAR!!

LOL, okay, I don't hate you then. CaysE might hate me because I killed that wire harness a long time ago; back in '94 (wire harnesses weren't that popular back then)- but then again, you'll never find my car in a junkyard, so it doesn't matter.
Forgot to say that I found that pic of my radio/eq setup; I'll try to get it scanned in tonight. I know you're all dying to see the equalizer below a pull-out cassette deck!

LOL... wait your car is an '86? I don't think 86 f-bodies came with a wiring harness at all. Last I checked, it was 87 and up, unless Firebirds got them before Camaros.
Don't worry Tom. I wouldn't hate you. Just curse you. CURSE YOU DAMMIT!

Hey, that metal bracket behind the cd player...do they serve any purpose at all? I have been wanting to take mine out but I dont know if it will like make my console fall apart or what. It just unbolts, and my cd player would fit so much nicer...

Hey Disturb, as far as i know that metal bracket was for extra support for the old stock delcos that came with the car. I pulled mine out quite a few years ago and my console still has no probs
without it my stereo fits in alot better and i have the radio and half din EQ in the pod.
