Head Unit Installation Kit? 1.5 Din

Is there such a thing for 1.5 din head units? It seems I have a ton of space in mine and no place to mount my head unit. I am a little retarded at the whole stereo installation however I was able to solder up a wiring harness for my head unit and it worked perfectly for the first time (I felt so proud).

I just don't have it mounted in the dash. Does anyone have pics of the kit, or how you mount the head units in the dash?

Thanks.

You can buy a kit for $10-15. Places like Circuitcity and Bestbuy have them.

If you're not super concerned with how the install kit looks just go to walmart. It's $9 for their scosche (sp) kit (which by the way a lot of install places use) whereas I spent $20 at circuit city for the metra kit. The latter came with more pieces, about 80% of which I didn't need or use. Unless you're doing a head unit and EQ, I wouldn't bother with the metra kit. (And beware that not all EQs fit in the metra kit either. My clarion EQ didn't.) You can also make your own flush mount kit if you're handy with a dremel.

There are a few 1.5 DIN head units out there, but usually they're not that great and cost more than single DIN ones. They're basicly intended for people who want an upgrade to the basic features (like a CD player instead of the factory cassette) and have a stock look without any adapter.

Here's my head unit and EQ flush mount install. I just marked the size of the components on a sheet of ABS and went to work. I'll see if I can find a picture of the radio before the EQ install.

I have a Alpine CDA-D852 that I picked up for 100 bucks. I installed it fine, it looks great, just not perfect. I would rather have it fit right then make it look ghetto.

Thanks for the responses guys!

Oh, o.k., you already have a 1.5 DIN head unit, I thought you were asking if there were any out there.

It looks like this one might work:
http://www.crutchfield.com/cgi-bin/S...=1&cc=01&avf=Y

You may end up just getting the kit that's intended for an EQ and just cut off the little extra at the bottom to get it to fit. How do you have it installed now?

since that alpine is designed to mount directly to the car, just like the stock radio instead of using a mounting sleve, there's no "kit" for you to use. you could always get some flat ABS and build a new trim ring for a cleaner look.

Then you may not have gotten all of the parts. I believe that the 1.5 DIN head units from Pioneer and Alpine either come with the necessary bracketry or they are able to use the brackets from the stock radio.

hmm, they probabally use stock radio brackets, but since there aren't any brackets that exist in my car, that would probabally be it. I will take a look for some sort of installation kit at circuit city tonight after work and see whats up.

Since I have an hour before I have to go to work, I took a few pics.

Here is where the factory brackets should be, but I deffinitely don't see any (I don't even know what they are supposed to look like).
<img src="http://www.elite-fraggers.org/sonarun/TransAm/Radio/Inside%20Din%20Housing.jpg">

Here is an outside shot without the HU installed.
<img src="http://www.elite-fraggers.org/sonarun/TransAm/Radio/No%20HU%20Installed.jpg">

This is a picture of the side of the HU and the housing in the background. You can see how the HU mounts and the lack of mounts in the housing.
<img src="http://www.elite-fraggers.org/sonarun/TransAm/Radio/HU%20and%20Housing.jpg">

Finally, this is how the radio looks installed. Its not straight, but its pretty tight with the extra padding I put underneath it. I need a bracket or something

See those 2 bolt holes on the right? There should be 2 just like it on the left. Your console is broken. The stock head unit has brackets attached to it that are held to that surface by 2 bolts on each side. You need to get ahold of those brackets and a new console, or *******-engineer something. For what a console costs on Ebay, I'd get one.

My mistake, I thought you were puting in a 1 DIN and wanted a 1.5 adaptor. Yeah, Jim is right. The radio pod needs to be replaced. That plastic is really brittle and breaks after a few years in the heat. Not to hard to replace.

Re: Head Unit Installation Kit? 1.5 Din

I have an aftermarket head unit which is only 1 din, and I need a mount for it to fit in my 90 camaro. I once came across a website where they were specially made for camaros, but I can't find it now. Where can I get one??

I don't know if you realized, or even read the thread, but it's been about 8 years since the last post. You can buy them at walmart, best buy, circuitcity(online now), and even directly from the companies such as scosche.

Re: Head Unit Installation Kit? 1.5 Din

I bought a scosche kit at target for less than 20 bucks and it had all the wiring harnesses and instructions. It looks OK and it's just temporary until I decide how I want to set up the rest of my system.
