85 factory subwoofers

any help in finding a replacement for the factory subwoofers for a 85 trans am. the woofers are 5 1/4" diameter, no longer available from GM.

also, cassette on the factory GM unit died (although radio and all other functions work). I located a replacement, although it has a slightly different pin layout (see photo). The factory unit has an additional two wires coming out of the unit (possibly for the subwoofer??)

any tricks of the tradae i might try with the original unit before it gets taken out??

thanks for any and all your help..

My car had those. Are they actually 5.25? I wasnt sure how to measure them. I get 5.25 from mounting hole to mounting hole. But if I just measure the ousides of the surrounds, I get 4.5. I know that almost all of the aftermarket speaker companies make 5.25 component setups which would probably work for this. If the size is measured by the ouside of the surround, then I know that rockford also makes a 4" component setup. I do have to say that I was supprised at the size of the magnet on the backs of these for stock speakers, but mine were blown all to hell when I got the car so I have just done without them so far, but would like to replace them eventually.

The Fiero store offers a replacement 5" subwoofer for the Fiero stock system, maybe it would work in the firebird as well. It's 29.95, web address is www.fierostore.com.

Ok, dumb ***. I understand perfectly well that 5 1/4 and 5.25 are the same thing. I have no problems with fractions. I was asking if they are actually that size. Is that more clear. If you could read you would realize that I was asking how they are measured and not if 5.25 was the same thing as 5 1/4. I guess hooked on phonics didnt work for you. Have a nice day.

I think radio shack has them. they can get a wide arange of OEM style speakers, or most speaker shops just bring in the old one, it makes it easer.

For more of a selection... www.crutchfield.com sells many that size... and I have had good luck with them. They send diagrams and connectors to help with the instal, and comes with tech support too!
