Deck mounting help???

so i get my new car home and start messing with the radio. i decide to remove the tape deck so i can put in my new deck, thats when i discover that i have an option most firebirds don't, a wood dash. lucky me!!

annyway here is a picture of the dash, the guy at cartoys said that i wouldhave to buy a new stereoconsol unit from pontiac. the parts guy at the dealer said it would be $90 new. this sucks.

anny ideas or just sympathy let me know

There should be a screw hole below the one on the left, and then two more on the right. The only way to really fix it is to replace that portion of the console. There are a few ways around it, some are ghetto some are more "custom". The ghetto route: get a couple of metal strips, and drill holes that match the factory ones, and then attach them to the remains of the console. The second would be to make a custom panel to flushmount the head unit and try attaching it to the trim panel that goes around the radio/HVAC console. That way, rather than the HU bolting to the console, it would connect to the trim piece. Altho you may find that the weight of the radio pops the adapter off the trim panel.

Have you called any junkyards to see how much a used console would put you back?

Ouch! That gives new meaning to the word "custom".
