amp goes into "protection"

i just finished a basic stereo install in my 1984 Z28. the system consists of a pair of 6.5s in the dash, 6x9s in the rear sails, a Kenwood Excelon HU, and a 50x4 amp to run the speakers. the speakers, wiring, and interconnects are new. the HU, amp and RCAs are from the system i had in my Corvette (selling the car, and removed the stereo).

now onto my problem. whenever i run the volume over half... or boost my mid/bass/treble settings, the amp shuts off and lights up the "protection" bulb. a friend of mine says its because of bad RCA cables (they are used). im thinking the amp has had it and i need a new one. rather than shell out for a new amp, im going to test his theory and purchase a new set of RCA cables. any other suggestions?

I would say its the amp doing it. When i wire my subs in parralle and they go to hit hard it shuts off. So you maybe over drawing the amp.

I could be wrong but i would like to see what the real problem is.

amps usually go into to protection if you are overworking them or the install of the power and ground cable is insuffeicent. rcas are probably not the problem.

gain setting was at the absolute minimum... power wire was 8 gauge.

bought a new Kicker KX300.4 amp today, wired it up, and had no problems . the old amp was a Jensen KA4400 . so im sure after 2 years of use, that it was dead.

thanks for all the help!
