Back Seats

I was reading a few threads on subs in the place where your back seats are. I was recently thinking about doing this. I have a custom setup in my trunk now its all flush fit with amp rack and everything. But anyway, i really wanted to step it up to the kicker 1200 watt amp with either 3 comp vr's 12", or 3 solo baric 10"s. I wanted to put this setup inplace of my back seats since i dont use them. While i was reading i was hearing alot of people saying that this wont sound good. Why wont this sound as good as the box in the hatch?? I mean if u get boxes in trucks and cars with wide open backs whats the difference with the camaro. Just a lil help and explanation for this reasoning would help.

Thanks
John

I don't think it's a case of not sounding good in the back seat area. It's more a case of sounding a LOT better in the hatch area. When you have such a perfect position for subs, both asthetically and acoustically, it would be foolish not to utilise it. The hatch glass acts as a perfect rebound for the bass, sending the waves hurtling toward the front of the car. It's more discreet too.

Coupled with the fact that it would cost a lot more money to make it look like a clean, professional job in the back seat area, taking into account the side mouldings etc., it leaves no doubt in most peoples' minds where to put their subs.

One reason for putting your subs further back in your car would be that since lower frequencies have much wider sound waves, it helps to not have your lower frequency speakers right in your face. It takes the waves longer to get where there going and to have the waves right were they need to be.have you ever noticed that when you stand right next to your car your stereo doesent sound very loud but when you move 25 feet away from your car that its loud as ****? and unless your doing some kind of all out show car it isent very suitable for a daily driver anyways.

Its more understandable to me now, thanks. Just that my sub in the hatch are pointing right tward the deck of the hatch, which makes sence to me that the sound waves would just bounce back and forth. now if my box was angled tward the glass part it would make more sence. Ill post a pic if i can of my setup. I was just thinking the subs facing front in the seat area would sound louder.

ACTUALLY, I performed this installation on my Camaro about 5 years ago and it sounds great. Now from my standpoint I am the only one that has actually had both types of systems in my car. Granted the reasons the gentlemen gave for wanting the subs in the rear is correct, somewhat. I still have the same 10's small Rockford amp, and everything and it all still performs quite well. I have twice the space I had before and most people do not really recognize the installation due to the fact that it looks somewhat stock and blends into the interior. I spent many hours and used at least one sheet of MDF to produce a box that performed well as well as looked good and fit the curves of the seat wells.

Just a small question how many people actually use their rear seats for seats. I mean I am not a big guy and with my seat right where I want it only midgets can ride behind me, so therefore the rear seats are basically useless for transportation. I still have plenty room to store stuff, like tools, spare tire, jumper cables, shotgun, bodies, you know the normal stuff that a hatch box tends to take up.

just my .02......

My 3 month old baby daughter uses one of my rear seats, with a child seat of course. But when she's in the car I don't use my sub anyway.
