subwoofer mounting depth

how much space should be behind the subwoofer magnet for the sub to breathe? im building an enclosure for my kicker 10" L5, fully powered, so i dont want to choke it from breathing, and my design now is 1 3/8" from the back of the box, and im thinking thats too small.

any suggestions/numbers? thanks

Hey my car looks like yours, except i have no primer, american racing rims, windsheild vinyl, and a rear spoiler. As far as the sub, im no expert but i have made my own boxes, i think id go 2 inches minimal behind the subs magnet if you have the box made already and do not want to add depth to it you can always cut a spacer board for the sub and mount it to the front of the box, and make sure you keep as close to the recomanded vas, aka air space for the sub, if you do have to go a little smaller then recomended go to walmart and buy polyfil, if you go to big then you can glue some styrafoam (i think thats how its spelled) blocks like the crap thats used in packages. good luck post how it turns out. :lala: :lala:

My subs are about 1\2 in from the wood on the back of the box, and they're fine.

i think i got the mounting figured out, i have around 1 5/8" now, so i think ill be ok. anothe thing i wanted to know, is if the box is only 9 inches or so from the top of the well, am i still going to hear it? i see a lot of ppl with the boxes a lot higher, so is the lower box going to effect the sound much?
