18" IDW in my z28
Alright, so ive come across an amazing deal on an Image dynamics IDW 18 and i was wondering if anyone on this site has ever put an 18" sub in the well under the hatch. I know theres enough volume in there for the specs of the sub and i know it could be done, possibly lots-o-fabrication, but i need some ideas of what to do...ie...placement of the sub..etc. so if anyone has any pics of 18s in there car please post away...this is what ive got now 2 IDQ12s.

from the looks of it, there wont be enough airspace for a nice ported box unless you glass it and get creative. Im walling my 18s but they require more airspace than yours

Im definatly not going to be putting my IDW in a ported box. i have been doing a lot of reading on Aperiodic enclosures and it seems that this would be the best bet for my situation. only problem with this is that it is a hatchback and i would have to cut out part of the bottom of my car....which i may be wrong but i believe theres a gas tank under there. so it may be tricky but SQ wise it would be the best way to go.

You can fit 2 18"s in the hatch well, but it's gonna have to be sealed. I have 2 18" Kicker CVRs in my well. The box is raised above the gas tank area and branches forward. It's around 1.8 ft per chamber and it has a divider wall. There was no cutting to the car involved and yes there is a gas tank under the sheet metal in that area so there's little if not fab. you can do the metal.
Here's the proof there 18"s!!
Come here to see the pics in a bigger format (you got to click on the thumbnails).
Planning on redoing the box with a fiberglass type sometime before Spring. Place to watch for clearance is the top area. Mine actually hit off the hatch plastic so I heated it up with a torch and bent the plastic in no more problem now.

if you're wondering if there's enough room to put it in the lower half or underneath the well cover, no. the diameter is too big. however, if you're using the entire well, yeah, you can find enough space if you're good with angles

I couldn't get my kickers to down fire even if I put them flush against the sheet metal above the gas tank area.

There's a big difference in tightness though, course 10s and 12s gonna sound tighter. I think I get fairly decent sound out of my 18s. I wanted them for pressure though. Like I said mine just won't hit as fast as a pair of 10s or 12s, course when you see how much more cone space they have then it all understandable.
it depends on the sub of course, but even with the larger motor structure, pushing and pulling that large cone/spyder and coils is going to get very hard to do, depending on what type of music that you are listening to.
im not saying it all sounds like farts, but it would most certainly not be my choice for SQ.

whatever you do please put them in an mdf box not the cheap *** particle board. And made sure the subs air space needs are ment. It makes no sence to even have 18s if you can not supply the proper air space.

Same reason ppl rather go for 10s compared to 12s.... 10s hit clean and respond good. The bigger the sub the slower itll bump. Certain music doesnt handle to good to bigger subs. Ex. A fast pace techno song wouldnt handle to good to 15s or 18s... You know the drill... Need I really explain. 15s--18s etc are mostly used in competitions since they need less to make them louder. Also in comps it doesnt matter how nice it sounds just how loud it is. Which is a big crock of ****. Who cares how loud it is...I wanna hear some kinda music coming out of it too.
