Well, I've been working on a custom sub enclosure for my '91 RS. Here's a picture of it finished and installed. Just thought I'd share with all you car audio freaks out there.

Can I see a picture with the t-tops in there as well?

How do they sound with the tops inside?

Thanks for the compliments guys. I don't know how the t-tops are gonna fit in the back with the new box. I don't know if there's enough clearance. I would try it right now, but being at 7300 ft. there's about 6" of snow on the ground and it's still snowing. But I was able to get some more photos yesterday before the storm hit us...if anyone is interested. Thanks again.

I have a question for all you guys...do you think I should get some grilles for the subs or just leave them the way they are?

 

Grilles.

It only takes one can of pop, one golf ball, or one jack handle to make you realize you should have gotten grilles.

BTW, that's a nice, clean install.

 

ya i would go with a grille...there are some pretty nice ones out now...check parts express

or you can buy the scosche spinner grilles

 

To be honest, after seeing the picture of the install... I don't think that I would bother with grilles.

Not to put down anything anyone else said, their points are vaild, but I think that if you try to store anything back there now, you deserve to have something break.

There is no room for you to safely put anything back there in my opinion. Therefore there is no reason to spend the money on a set of grilles. Not to mention the fact that I always thought the "non-grilled" look was cooler looking in the first place.

Just My $.02, like I said.

 

Ya I dont got grilles either. Cuz well theres no room back there for anything to hit the subs.

If you plan on putting anything back there, then go with grills.

I have my subs on little humps, so not too much can roll onto the subs.

I also use a blanket when I am carrying things back there on long trips, it acts as a kind of speed bump to stop stuff from getting to the subs.

I'd feel safer with grills. But I would like them to complement the rest of the setup of course.

 

Thank for all the input guys. I think DigitalMonarch0 has a point about the grilles. I'm certainly not gonna be storing things back there with my setup. Plus, amps get hot and need to breathe and they can't do that with **** piled on top of them. I'll look around for some grilles and if I find something that accents the setup, then I go for it. It's all cosmetic from here. Thanks again guys.

 

My enclosure is exactly like that. Yours looks awesome man. I haven't been running any grilles for about a year now and no problems, however I dont' throw **** back there either. So yeah, if you are planning on storing junk back there you deserve to have something break, otherwise don't worry about it.

 

How is T-Top storage for you? Do they fit back there with that setup?

I've got 2 RF 12's waiting for springtime, but if I can't store the tops back there, I probably won't do the install.

 

Fortunately, I dont' have to worry about storing T-Tops, cuz unfortunately I dont' have them. I see absolutely no room though to put them anywhere. My box just sits flat on the ledges in the well, it doesn't go all the way down to the bottom, yet. I honestly wouldn't have done this one if I had T-tops. I'll get a pic once I can get my f****** digital camera to work.

your install looks good. as for the grills, don't do it. get a 1/4 in sheet of plexy glass and mount it about 2 in above the subs. you should still be able to use your t-tops bag and it'll sound really good to. my cap and dist block mount underneith the recessed amp. the plaxy glass is held up by pvc pipe cut 2 in long and a bolt going through them. my box is ported, don't do that. i used a dremel and cut some slots into the plexy for looks, didn't change the sound at all. have more pics if wanted.

i bolted my box down and will be putting grilles on, gives potential thieves more to fuss with if they figure their gonna take my subs at least it puts some more time into getting em off

 

Hey ace16a, I like the looks of your box. The plexi-glass across the top is very original. You mentioned NOT porting the enclosure. Well, I'm not planning on it. Actually, while I was building the enclosure I decided to cut a piece of MDF to separate the box into two equal airspaces. So now it's a little over 1 cu. ft. per sub, as compared to both subs using the same airspace. The bass sounds tight and that's the way I like it. I have a question for you...Does the plexi-glass effect your amp's ability to breathe?

 

Why is it a bad idea to port the box? I would think if anything it'd help to amplify the sound and keep the body panels from rattling as much. could someone explain this please?

 

i also have my box chambered and no, i've never had my amp overheat in the 3 yrs i've had it in that box.

Some subs do sound good ported, but they usually require a large amount of air space, something not found in a third-gen. Unported boxes sound much better.

 

some subs dont require a lot of airspace and therefor would work well ported in a third gen...it really depends what subs you're using

 

I have found that ported boxes seem to have a bit of a vibrating sound as the tube vibrates from the bass.

From the enclosures I have heard, as well as the ones the people I talk to have heard, a non-ported enclosure is more likely to produce a better and even range of bass, while a ported box is usually really loud for a certain freq of bass.

They both can sound good, it just depends on your listening preference. What you listen to and what equipment you have.

 

i think what you're talking about is port noise...which wont be existent if the box is designed correctly

a low tuned ported box will have excellent SQ with the right sub

thay will fit i have the same set up in my bird it sounds cool with them in there. almost like a banpas box. if you vent the box on both sides. but then agin what worked for me may not for you.

 

I'm not worried too much about the sound, I don't think that the glass will change the sound quality enough for me to care. My main concern is the T-Tops clearing the top of the amp. I've got these two 12's sitting in my garage waiting for spring, but I won't buy an amp and build a box for them if it's not going to fit.

Kind of a touch spot, I've just never seen a pic on TGO with subs and t-tops in the hatch.

 

okay, im bringing this post back from the dead to ask you guys how you built those boxes. What are they made out of? What are the dimensions? Do you have pics of the entire box outside of the car?

 

most boxxes are made out of 3/4 MDF

 

If I were you I would just move the amp and build a wood cover with perferated grills in it.You could probably build it up higher to cover the amp too.
