why didnt your put your sub(s) inside the little hole like most people, this way your sound wave comes up the hatch window and you get a ncie fat rolling bass note, this way your just going to get the bass staying in teh hatch area...

If everyone jumped off a bridge...?

I like that. I've never seen it before, that's why I like it. And look at the angle he has it facing. That's not gonna fire bass up front? OK. Sure.

Looks good GndPrx. Maybe you could market it if it works out well. I'd buy it, if it sounded good. And it looks like it will.

Good luck,

AJ

Looks pretty good!
Do you have any plans for that thing? Or is this all just on-the-fly?

That looks like a 12" opening, right? What are you planning on dropping in there?

It should work pretty nice after you get it all sealed up. You using glass or wood to seal the back?

Thomas.

Do you honestly think you will tell a difference in sound from a side fireing sub and top fireing sub ?

Hrmm, one at at time...

1. why didn't I put them in the well? Because that's over done, too simple, does not achieve the quality I'm looking for and in the well doesn't do much to win an IASCA world championship which is what I'm building this car for...Sound will make no difference in the corner and I could care less about SPL. The angle and design of the enclosure should sound identical to a well mounted enclosure.

2. If everyone jumped off a bridge? I'd hanglide down.

3. If the queen had *****? She'd be a hermaphrodite.

4. Plans or on the fly? A little of both. That's the beauty of freeform fiberglassing I have an idea of what I want, but it changes as I create the molds.

5. 12" Opening? Yes and it's designed for an Image Dynamics IDMax

6. Glass or wood? Wood for the large flat areas and fiberglass for the irregular areas.

Thanks for the comments so far...I hope to have this car done by sometime around March next year in time for Daytona Spring Break Nationals...but we'll see how the money holds out with a baby on the way.

Because of the design of this I doubt there would be any way to create a mold to offer to anyone else...We'll see what happens when I'm done though.

Carl are you planning on putting another 12" on other side? It looks great so far and can't wait to see it along the way. Please keep us posted on the install. I was just thinking if Glass would stick to plastic. According to your pick it looks like or is it misleading? Congrates on the baby!

The plastic takes a lot of TLC to get fiberglass to stick to it. I may just end up refabing the whole panel out of fiberglass, we'll see.

what you see so far is just the rough fitting while I shape all of the sides.

No, only a single 12" the other side will have a processor in it. As I said, I'm not after SPL, just pure Sound Quality.

Heh, you're not kidding. I use a dremel with a sanding drum to rough up the plastic of the kickpanels I make to get the fiberglass to stick to them, even then, some good elbow grease, and you can rip 'em right off. However, the 3M 77 spray I use for the tweed sticks very well!

Good luck at SBN! I'm hoping and praying that I will have the time and money to get my car done for that show, and still have money left to go! If I make it there, I'll be sure to come introduce myself.

This is exactly what I'm doing. I have a 12" solo going into the box but I haven't had the time to start yet. I've been busy with my amp rack in the back of the seat. I'm just going to finish it up and not worry about the cooling until I have problems. The amps stick out so the heat should exit no prob, passive heating like the Apple G4 cube computer . Anyways, my sub is a Kicker solo s12, not the cube, the year before. When it was still round but no dust cover . It looks really good.
As for getting the fiberglass to stick to plastic....why bother? Just round off and finish the plastic edge with some low profile detail and TLC. Then make a nice speaker grill out of some good chicken wire and grey carpet . Hopefully I can start thursday, I'll take some pictures as well.
Keep my updated, BTW, do you have AAA too? lol, that's why I don't have a spare..what's your excuse .

my excuse for no spare is... well weight, and i have friends and like 8 spare rims and tires at home. that is why i dont have a spare, and i was thinking of doing something similar but i am gonna mount my battery there. a friend has fabbed a bolt on holder for that area that holds a optima batter(dry cell) there perfectly. so i am gonna get on of those.

and i will be running a 12" tube from MYZ, as soon as he gets it for me.

Don't have AAA, but have fix-a-flat and sprint PCS road side assistance...just as good

No grill, the sub will be inverted. I'm getting Matt over at ID to modify the sub so the wire connections will be on the front of the sub, so no visible wires.

Updated pics...again...
It's starting to take shape, but I'm still not sure how I'm going to deal with the whole fiberglass/plastic issue...I'm thinking I may as well just remake the whole panel.

Carl,
Why not make the fiberglass enclosure completely behind the plastic, and just do a nice clean cut around the part's that need to stick out. That way the trim panel is really just a trim panel.

Carl, any reason why the Sub will be inverted?

Mike,

That's not a bad idea and it's kinda the way I was leaning, but I need to completely restore the panel then and as you can see it's in rough shape to begin with. I still may just refab the whole thing as it wouldn't be very hard, just a few layers of glass and a day or so.

We'll see how it works out when I finish off the enclosure.

And as far as inverted? No real reason other than cosmetics and not wanting to deal with a grill. There is no sound difference with a sub when it's inverted vs. not
