Box Suggestions/Comments??
Hey guys, I did a search and couldn't find anything Helpfull.
Anyways, Got 2 12" subs i want to finally start using. Problem is i have a 91 CONVERTIBLE, so, i loose all base if i put it in the trunk (as the top blocks everything).
Basicly what i've come to is the back seat. The seats are allready gone, So i'm going to start on a box this weekend. My only problem is i can't built a Full (4 sided) box, because of the weird fluid angles of the area. so what i'm thinking of doing is a 4 sided box (top, front, sides) and using a rubber gasket, or something i can use to seal off the bottom of the box. See the attached Picture.
Just wondering if somone has tried this? Or have any better ideas and such. I Might also find a way to attach semi boxes for my 6x9's too (6x9's won't fit into stock location of smaller rear speakers)
----Thanks Guys!!!------

It's an interesting idea, but the rubber gaskets won't really seal that area as well as it should be with two 12s. If you were to put a solid piece of MDF somewhere inside at the height of the top of the trans tunnel, that would give you a good sealed enclosure and still match the lines of the floor.
If you put a 5" component in the stock location (it's 5x7 in there stock?), it will most likely sound better than putting 6x9s in seperate boxes. You could probably fit a tweeter in with the 5" too.

if you want to mold your box to the shape of the trans tunnle use fiberglass on that part.

you don't lose bass with the top down because the top is blocking things, you lose bass because you're no longer feeding bass into a confined space. Putting the subs in the back seat will provide results even worse than having them in the trunk, because instead of at least having the trunk area as a bit of a confined space, you wind up with a box in the middle of an open area.
Using a 3 sided box and attempting to make an air tight seal is only going to make it worse.
There's no easy answer for getting bass in a convertable, but if I were you, I'd look at trying out some aura bass shakers before pissing away a ton of money into a fancy sub enclosure that isn't going to work. I think your 2nd best option may be to explore bandpass options in which the port dumps right under your front seat. This will excite the seat in the same way that a bass shaker would.

Jim's idea with the ports would work great. I'd suggest that. But if you still want a box there, here's your diagram edited to show what I'm talking about:
The shaded area is totally sealed (you would need another piece on the back, as well).

Thanks for all the Comments guys!!!
1- My friends has 3 10" subs in the back of his convertible camaro (same as mine), and w/ the top down, they might as well be in the car sitting behind you!!
2- I use my car daily, and some!!
. And i was hoping to be able to set bags, xbox's and 17" televisions on the box and not damage the subs...
...lol sounds silly, i know. Anyways, would i loose alot of sound by angling the subs twards the seat (like in my original pic) but make it a fully enclosed box instead?
3- I wouldn't have a clue where to start on using fiber glass. Although that might be the project down the road in a couple years, for now i have subs/amp that are just not being used.
Again, Thanks for all the Comments!!! :lala:

You could put the subs on any side, I just put them on top for ease of drawing.
You could also extend the enclosure for each sub down closer to the floor so you can make it ported and aim the ports right underneath the seats as Jim said.

Yea i was thinking about somthing like that, but i was hoping to use the stock seat mounting bolt holes to hold down the box. I think i'll just try this for now, and mabey come out w/ box 1.5 if i don't like the results and make a port to push the sound under the seat.

Yea, But so does the work involved....lol
Hey, you seem to be a fairly knowledged person on the audio section. Could i ask what you would do to employ 2 - 12" subs? I'm not going for competition or anything extreamly flashy, Mainly just functional.

I would seriously dump this idea of trying to use the floor as part of the enclosure. It's not going to work well. Either learn how to fiberglass a box bottom, or make one out of wood.
Although having no floor to the box may excite resonances in the chassis and maybe give a bass-shaker type of effect, I don't think it's going to work well enough to outweigh the major drawbacks to this design.

I can't remember the hardware off the top of my head (as i baught them, and then had them sitting for at least a year). But i was refering to Enclosure location and setup.

I think the gasket idea is good just to keep the enclosure from sliding around. That's about it though.
I have a custom box for the rear hatch with two 10"s, both with their own space (approx. 1 cu ft). I have a pair of the old Infinity Kappas in there facing straight up (the ones with the green cone) and they sound great. They don't hit very hard but I don't compete in SPL nor do I wish to go deaf. In the future I may go with the Kappa Perfects.
I would think you couldn't get really good SQ in a vert, but your best option would be to put a ported enclosure in the trunk for the most power. It would probably take up most, if not all, of the trunk space though. Aside from the trunk idea, what you're planning now is just as good.

Thanks Guys!
I'd hate to dedicate my trunk strickly for subs (plus i'm wary from what my freinds sounds like), so i think i'll stick to that what we have been talking about.
I'll try and post pics of how the project goes.
-Again, thanks for all the comments/info
