stock speaker boxes

the stock 6x9's have a little foam box (it looks like black fiberglass insulation) in the hole where they go. I've never seen these before, so after inspecting them, I decided it may be a good time to replace them, as hey look pretty beat up around the edges, even for an 82.

does anybody have a clue what I'm talking about? does GM still sell them? should i just remove them and leave the hole empty? any suggestions at all?

Its mostly just there for sound deadening and insulation. I doubt anyone sells it, maybe year one or someone who does repro stuff. I would look around at the junk yard, or try and make new insulation.
