I've fooled with a lot of the Rockford subs, and the only time I ever got the HX2s to sound good was in a ported box with around 2 cubes per sub.

Is that a photoshop.
Sorry I just had to say that. Keep us informed on your progress on your car. Id like to see some current progress pics and what your actually deciding to do. You still thinking about the 4th gen rear end? I actually like the black/blue look even though I despise 4th gen camaros.

In 1 cubic foot ported, it's flat down to 28hz, although when combined with the car's cabin gain, will result in a LOT of low frequency energy

I guess I've always liked ported better with these subs because they sound so bad, that at least in a ported box they get real loud. These definately don't represent the finest in sound quality.

i like them sealed i get more tons, you know Jim, i have not tryed ported, only once, not with these subs but others, i hate ported and bandpass, i still think that these are good subs, iv back them up with infinity amp's,
"These definitely don't represent the finest in sound quality"
you might be right there, but there pretty nasty, when there at there full output...
im thinking of my idea still only going up 2 to 3 more inchs higher then my org plan...

They definately are nasty. That's why I like them ported. Since they aren't a sound-quality type of sub, I figure that I might as well get them to hit as hard as possible.
I built a ported box for a guy's 91 camaro to hold a pair of HX2s. Unlike most of the boxes I build, he came to pick it up, so I was able to install it for him and get to listen to it. I could not believe how ridiculously loud that car got. It pounded so hard it hurt. It was definately louder than my system, which was measured at 141.1. If I had to guess, I'd say this was in the range of 145.
If you ever get the chance, I would definately encourage you to at least try a ported box and see what you think. 1 cubic foot, tuned to 30hz.

my box is down in that area flat with the little lip and the box is 1.27 cubic feet i needed 1.25 but it was customs so i think i came up damn close it has 1 infinity if u get that lid like in the picture no one will ever know you got a sub if you do your wireing good and dont crank it up
so to answer
little over 1.25 cubic feet in there with the thick board and custom cuts id think it would be hard to get more than that inside since you have to cut angled peices and all

hey need for speed, where the heck do you put your roof panels with that old setup?
also... if anyone is actually designing a new box design... I'd like to offer this idea... I had a truck box that fit a silverado 1500 single cab... about 1.5 feet wide, and 8 inches at the bottom... the bottom fit perfectly in the well...
I tried many experiments getting the most bass out of this box... I tried the following...
1) on the back shelf pointing up at the hatch... not much bass
2) in the well pointing forward... little bit more bass...
3) in the well pointing away from driver... INSANE bass... still feels like more than my friggin 15's... I miss that sub...
I'd think you'd be better off making both subs fire out the back, and leave an area along the back of the box for air to come out, so they aren't being suffocated....
bass waves like to bounce around and putting the speaker rear-facing gives you the biggest sound wave... putting the box so the speaker is facing up or down can sound nicer outside the car sometimes, but I know for a fact you lose a lot of in-car precious bass... pointing the speakers down, the sound wave is going to bounce around a bit, then basically go back up straight, and you aren't sitting there... so if its bouncing off the back of the car, eventually a deep bass sound wave will make its way to your ears.

He saying that you get the best sound when firing the subs into the rear of the car, the only downside is since you're hitting the body of the car you can get more rattles.

i want to put my subs in the well, but im thinking of using that storage lid as a template and face the subs 2 different ways, just so it isnt normal. my only thing is, i dont want to put the amp on the rear deck, would it be okay under the subs in the well?

ah that's cool... If I ever made myself another box, I think I would specifically design it with hooks for the t-tops to strap down to... I've noticed that the subs don't really sound too bad with the t-tops blocking the bass... it's not directional enough.
