Amp suggestion?
Amp suggestion?
I just got an Alpine head unit, Boston 6 x 9's (SL95) and Boston 4 x 6 plates (746). The alpine unit claims to put out 50 watts per channel, but I'm sure I'd be better with an amp.
6 x 9 specs - RMS 60WATTS/MAX 200WATTS
4 x 6 specs - Recommended amplifier power: 12-80 Watts
I could get a 4 channel amp that puts out 50 watts per channel, but wouldn't that blow the 4x6's? and wouldn't that be way less than the 6 x 9's should handle? Should I get 2, 2 channel amps? or is there something to limit the output to the channels? I'm a newb to this audio stuff...please give me suggestions....thanks.

If you get a 4ch. amp it should have a gain for the front channels, and a gain for the rear, or you can fade it more to the back to keep the levels down on the 4x6's, dont worry if you dont have every last watt that the speaker calls for.

The HU is only putting out about 15-18 WRMS. The 50W rating is a joke-even their new V-Drive HU only puts out 24WRMS.
A good 4 channel amp @ 50WRMS @ 4Ohm would be a good choice. Just set the gains properly and you will not have a problem

don't forget the HP setting and adjustable crossover point....this will make a huge difference in how your speakers sound. A seperate crossover control for the front and rear is desirable since you can probably get some more bass from the rear speakers, not so much from the front.
example: 100Hz and up is good for 6x9s
200 Hz and up will keep the 4x6s happy since they won't handle the bass as well as the 6x9s. This ofcourse will depend on your setup and what you prefer from your sound.
Don't worry about 'losing' your sub bass, chances are you will actually hear more bass since the speakers won't fall apart at every low note.
If sub bass is your cup of tea, addind a sub is easy enough and it really is the only way to achieve real bass.
50 watts RMS is plenty for the 6x9s, forget MAX power.....meaningless.
You could go 75 watts RMS, but I'm sure 50 will work fine too.

Thanks everybody, so do you think that this amp would be good for my setup. I don't plan on using subs, because I like the storage in my hatch area.

IMO that thing looks like it might be a little overkill but hey, its your cash, and it looks good
a couple things to consider.... The seller has 100% positive feedback wich is obviously good, the only thing is they dont advertise themselves as an authorized dealer and that could come back to haunt you if you need anything done under warranty on it. I would call them and ask if they are an authorized rockfor dealer, and if that is a b-stock amp or not.

Sorry man, should have explained better. If you take something in under warranty, more often than not the dealer, or manufacurer will just swap out your defective item for a new one. Then they remanufacture the defective piece and re-sell it as b-stock. In most cases they are as good as new but usually do not include a warranty, or maybe just like a 90day warranty or so. The reason i suspect this is that amp retails for 280-300 bucks.
ah, ok, I see. Thanks for the advice, so far I've had very good luck on ebay with electronics! But I will take your advice....I just want a crystal clear sounding system...so far I have 650 tied up in speakers and the head unit...but I figured, might as well get the most out of the speakers...thanks to everybody, I really appericate the help.
