The biggest thing with a problem like this is to get something quality and install it correctly. I'll put down $100.00 that your friends setup is cheap and/or (probably and) installed improperly. There's a chance that something is broken/not working correctly. But 99% if the time that something is cutting out there's and install problem.
What's you budget for a HU? If it isn't $1,000.00 I can't think of a in-dash DVD with flip out screen that (I think) is worth taking the time to install. If you what features like that "yo gota put down some bank for quality G." So what's your budget? What features are you looking for?

PS. If your friend did his own install don't let him help you. If a shop did it, don't go there. IMPROPER INSTALL CAN DAMAGE YOUR EQUIPMENT.!.!.!.

If money is no problem, check out the Pioneer AVIC-N1, pricey trick stuff. Alpine and Kenwood both have some neat offerings in the in-dash DVD/Monitor area. If the in-dash monitor is what you’re looking for. For any of these I would recommend professional installation.

Money man

Money man,
If there is no budget I would suggest a Clarion flip up screen....
Ran to some flip down 7 in Clarion monitors for back seats. Run only preamp outputs off the indash to a Zapco amp and run 4 component sets of Infinity Kappa's all the way around. Purchase another Zapco amp and buy 2 RE XXX 15s or 2 Adire brahma 15s

That would be a cool setup....

In my opinion.

If you would like other ideas leave me a personal message....

check out the eclipse 8533, that and one of the pioneers, the N1, the 6500, would be my choices, most likely.
