Jet Black Din 1.5? Help!

Hey TGO gang,
In my quest to replace my original deck in my '87 IROC I have came to the conclusion that I need some help

Basically I want a Din 1.5 CD player, but I want it to be Jet black like my stock tape deck (non-Bose) and match my interior which is all black.

I kind of like the Pioneer P47DH / P77DH HU's, but I do NOT like the fact that they are GREY and IMHO look out of place.

I REALLY like the stock Camaro '94-97 Fourth gen decks, esp. since it looks stock! Here's a pic:

GM Part number was 16175961 for that bose one.

Question is, can I use that fourth gen Bose deck in my 87 IROC?

Did they make a non-Bose version of that (different part # maybe)????

Also, I'd like to know of any other suggestions on HU's either factory or aftermarket, I just don't want a grey deck.

They're also a din and a half. You might just need to purchase a wiring harness to go with this deck. I doubt they hook up exactly the same. It shouldn't be too difficult to find however... just check out some 4th gen forums...

what about the mounting depth, and the ohm requirements?

if you are changing out your speakers, you may consider the monsoon system and get the appropriate speakers... as its much better than the stock radios...

I'd still go with an aftermarket if I were you

Ditto. Probably more trouble than it's worth. I'm a fan of the deck that came in my car. It's just a tape deck and it's only like 100w, so it looks pretty ghetto. Not worth stealing. But I have a full eq underneath it and the deck has a changer control for my 10 disc changer. Booya! (and it doesnt look out of place IMO)

dang, I can hardly fit my deck in, let alone a damned eq! that's some fine work...

I have to pull my console back a bit, pull all my stereo wires down through that opening... push the stereo in and pop it into the mounting bracket... then I shove as much of the wires back up into the opening, and slide the console back... it's pretty hard (read: 'impossible') to get the wiring perfect before putting the stereo in... to make it all fit, that is.

I have considered the Monsoon, but all the ones I found have black buttons with a grey face, like I said I am looking for an all black unit.

I don't think there was much of an aftermarket for din 1.5...

I might even consider a regular DIN deck at this pointif it was all black...

you could leave the stock h/u and remote mount an after market one
if "that stock look" is what you are really wanting

I want the "stock look", but more importantly, I want an all black deck.

ScrapMaker, you might be right, I don't know if GM made a Delco CD player in all black, if some1 knows a GM # that might help me out for the newer 98+ or the Monsoon decks, but I think I am just about sold on swapping the '93-97 CD deck in (pictured above). I just need to find 1

that's exactly what the monsoon system looks like... aside from the actual monsoon logo on there.

I still wonder if the monsoon system has an external amp somewhere, or if it's all internal.

when thoes brake they are expencive to replace....

some good jet black aftermarket decks are alpine, excelion(sp?) kenwood and some older kenwoods. And if you put a eq under them they look sweet IMO.

maybe it's just me, but adding the EQ looks too cluttered....

plus my deck has a 13-band EQ built-in...

i've personally had very good luck with sony decks. check out the m-800 m-850 or somewhere in those whereabouts if your on a budget. I myself just got a Sony MEX-5DI. I like it for the display. But it requires all speakers be amped (no internal amp)

I'll snap a picture of the m-800 that is currently in my car and let you decide for yourself whether you like it.

Yeah, thank you, I love it!

It looks stock and keeps all the theives out, and it works as good as it looks!

If my car was an '88-89, this could be OE equipment! I take it these decks are hard to find and I got lucky to score this one

I never liked the fact that ANY aftermarket regular DIN deck is 1) pushed out way too far and 2) is NOT all jet black like the rest of my interior and that would just bug the h3ll out of me and 3) gets in the way when I'm shifting (manual trans for me pls).

Plus, I don't need some big "system / beat" for all "my peeps yo", this thing is all out heavy metal assault through the stock speakers.

And if that isn't loud enough to drown everyone out, my exhaust will

I've been down the stock road ... I have the exact same deck as vindeezl. It's completely referbished on the inside. Brand new CD mech .. etc .etc. Works like new.. and it's not going back in the car. But what I've done is located a different single din adapter and picked up a nice black 05 Panasonic deck. Installed it sticks out no farther than the stock deck. No mods required. I really like it.. and I'm not that easy to impress when it comes to the fit and finish of a deck in my car. Pics to come soon. installation is almost complete.

What I didn't like about the stock deck: skips to easy, can't play CD-R's that well, not all that loud (barely enough to drown out road noise with the windows open).

Oh vindeezl, do your buttons light up on on your deck? if not I know how to make work. The button face color tells me it's from a Oldsmobile. The Camaros had black faced buttons.

FastElectrics, my deck doesn't skip, and plays CD-R's very well.

The buttons do light up in Blue, just like the face, but I like it it is kind of different from the stock green led, but it's brighter, without being obnoxious (sp?)

I do agree that it doesn't get SUPER loud like an aftermarket deck, but it's loud enough for me.

Maybe later on down the road I will upgrade the stock speakers and have a little more headroom, I dunno?

I just like the fact that it is black.

How much did you pay to get yours refurbished?

I'll admit that an aftermarket deck can get pretty loud with the windows up... but once you roll them down, then you start getting into the area where to get the sound loud enough to cancel out all the road/wind noise, then the internal amp starts distorting the sound.

gotta have external.

Now thats just not fair.. I've tried so many CD-R's to get mine to play them and it doesn't like em. The head unit is a 1994 model too. Perhaps your deck is not from a Olds.. where mine is. I have to run a jumper between two pins on the inside in order to get the buttons to light.. not a big deal though easy mod. I paid 500 bucks canadian to get mine refubrished.. granted it would have probably been cheaper to get it don in the US..

forgive me for saying so, but you people are insane....

that out of the way...

you could have bought a hella kewl killer headunit with ever feature known to man....

either the sony with the dvd-quality screen, or the pioneer with the 13-band EQ... 500 bucks is a lot of green for a stock H/U...

I wish I had the kind of dough you guys had laying around to toss into stock equipment... but if that's what your heart desires... more power to ya...

what other kind of stock stuff have you had to dish out mula for? stock seating, dashboard, doorpanels, emblems... stuff like that?

ya I was insane.... I know the kind of aftermarket HU I could have had.. Which is why It was an exspensive lesson.. Which is why I have a new 05 Panasonic HU now.. nice and black. with a adapter that moves the HU up, and in farther.. looks quite good. has a lame little storage slot under it, just big enough for a CD case.. which I guess is ok.. The only other stock stuff I bought for mine.. see the list below.. I'm also added new emblems.

FastElectrics quoted 500 dollars, canadian. A toch less by US standards, but still some good money.

~$70 US dollars and a bit of elbow grease and cleaning is all it took me.

That's big "mula"

Either way, like you said yourself it's what I wanted, so more power to me.

Thanks for the link 87CIZ, if I was going with the single DIN aftermarket HU, I would go with that. That's gotta look great at night

My deck doesn't stick out 3" and it's nice not to hit the faceplate on accident (sometimes on purpose ).

My old S10 used to have a real bad sticking out problem and I would be able to touch the next track button when I was in 5th gear, sometimes I'd hit the deck with some spirited shifting!

That had the same sort of cheap Radio Shack plastic install kit and cheap JVC deck.

Sure thing.. . Here ya go... The adapter was for a 96 GM Pickup I do beleive.. I didn't really look at what vehicle it was for. Just asked for a perticular style.

Sorry for the crappy pics.. but the car is in the garage still and the lights don't illuminate the inside of the car all that well.

The tweeters.. not really.. I should have used adjustable ones to tilt them up.. but the real reason they are there is because I converted from Manual windows to Power Windows.. so I needed to do something with the hole.

if you lived in texas you'd use the A/C for half the year, and the heater the other half...

it's so confusing too, not like the seasons define the weather patterns...

two days ago it was hailing and the roads froze over...

today I needed the A/C in my car

if I'm on the highway, I will typically just use the windows, unless I'm really being stingy with gas mileage, then I'll use the A/C.

I have the CD deck out of my girlfriends' 94 Z34, but it is black and grey... also won't eject any cd's lol

If you take out the stock radio bracket in the back of the console, you can flush-mount nearly any aftermarket headunit no problem!

I flipped mine upside down.. worked perfect.. though I found in order to totally flush mount it the air ducts on either side need to be modified.

is the only point of that metal piece to keep the stock radio from sliding in too far?

if I recall, the stock radio even had a plastic cone-like spacer that fit into that metal piece, to keep it from sliding.

Far as I've found, yes, that bar is only there for the little **** on the back of the stock radio. I removed mine and I couldn't be happier!

wow... that would make it easier to mess with my stereo... right now, for me to put my deck in, I have to pull the console as well... and stuff the wires down there... then cram them back into the radio area, and push the console up against the radio pod...

this would solve everything...

my pioneer is smart... the RCAs don't plug into the back of the deck, the connectors are about 6 inches from the harness...

smart in the case of our cars.
