6 1/2" front speaker mounting problems
i made some custom brackets for under the dashboard to house 6 1/2" speakers instead of the normal 4"x6", the only problem is the speakers sit a lil deeper than the stock ones, so my air ducts going to the air vents by the side doors get in the way..
anyone do any modding to this or know a way around this, i was thinking about removing the ducts and cutting about an 1/2 to a 1" off the top and resealing it.

Where under the dashboard are you mounting the new speakers? Directly under the dash or in the kick panels?
Also, what does the 6.5" mounting depth have to do with the 4x6's?

so wait, you're trying to stuff 6.5" speakers in the stock 4x6 location? The things people will do instead of building kicks...
Anyway, read the car audio tech article on this website. It gives step-by-step instructions for installing oversized 4x6s into the dash. Most of the procedure applies to your problem.

I considered the kicker panel instalation, but I also thought about getting a custom mount built for the doors that hold 6.5's and a cup holder. The guy at the local custom car audio shop said that he would use plywood or mediem density fiber board to make a box that is shaped to fit the carpet shape on the lower half of the doorcover it in carpet like that on the doors now and build a cup holder in the back of the whole thing. All that mess for $125. Haven't had it done yet, but when I decide what I want to do about my car, I will post a pic of it. What do you guys think about it?
do you have a diagram? this sounds interesting. i don't think $125 is a bad deal from a shop, but you could probably make your own for $50-70 (mdf baffles, fiberglass matt, resin, sand paper, carpet or paint). is he just going to use mdf or will he fiberglass it, too? fiberglassing isn't that hard as long as you do it right and give it time to dry.

I am not sure about the materials, but I don't think he is gonna use fiberglass. But as for doing it myself, everything they install or build is 100% guaranteed. That way if anything goes wrong
. No, I don't have a diagram. This guy does everything in his head and has been at it for 15 years. He built a sub box for his first new car, a 1986 IROC. I held the world record for subs. Sixteen 12s in one box. In fact, he still has it.
