Best combo for me and questions about my original radio

Hello all, I have a 88 GTA with radio buttons controls on the wheel.

I wan't to buy a CD player that can read MP3 disc. I also wan't 4 new speakers of the original size (6x9 and 4x6). I don't plan on installing an amp and/or sub ever...

I don't have much cash, what would be a good combo for me? What do you guys recommend?

Can I still use the controls on the wheel?

Will my power antenna still work?

Anyone know why my original radio right now can play cassettes and not radio? It used to play radio stations 1 of 10 try approx... But now I can't listen to any radio station... Pretty boring. Is it easy to repair?

Sorry for my bad english!

Thanks

Do a search for "PAC Steering Wheel" and you'll find 200 posts with information on using their device for retaining the stock steering wheel controls.

Any MP3 deck that comes with a wireless remote control will fufill your needs.

Speaker choices depend on what you like the sound of. Try to listen to different brands and decide based on what your ears like. Personally I like Boston Acoustics 746 plate speakers for the 4x6 location, but installing them into a firebird isn't exactly a drop-in excercise. There's a step-by-step article in the tech section that covers the installation of these speakers into that car.

infinity kappa are very good speakers. I think they make the 4-6 plate too. Which isnt a plug n play either I dont think but anyway...I say take a trip to your local shop and listen

Oh and for head units. I reccomend. Alpine, Clarion, Pioneer(Everyone hear says is good), and I hear eclipse is good too,

I think I will get a Pioneer deck first, I will see what to do next. I would like to get 4x6 speakers that I don't need to modify anything to make them fit.

In a Pontiac, that means that you can bascially rule out all of the top models. The Boston plates, infinity plates, and anything with a large-ish magnet won't fit without modification. Unfortunately, that basically leaves you with low cost junk for options.

just so you know, you are going to be looking for the speakers with the HIGHEST efficiency rating possible... so that sound somewhat decent running off of the headunit's amplifier.

my 6x9's are 94db.... I'd suggest much higher than that even... over 100db...

the magnets are so large that you have to use the spacers though... unless you tear into that stock foam crap.. which I didn't...

isn't it for every 3db of sensitivity, it requires half the power to get the same decibel output?

I think I'm gonna buy some Kicker KS46 4x6. You think they will fit pretty easy? It's a 2005 model and the guy selling it on eBay says it fits factory opening... Hmmm

just check the specs on those speaker models... and tell us the mounting depth...

unless someone else has them specifically, that's all we can go on.

holy crap...

they must have changed something since my model... I'd almost swear mine were 4ohm... because I would have overheated my deck at 1/2 power if they were 2ohm..

I kinda wish I had those now... with my 4channel amp that can take 4chx2ohm

I'm running 2x4ohm and 2x2ohm...

So do you think the model I'm looking at right now will fit without modifications? Kicker KS46...

Assuming those Kappa specs are the same as last year's specs... no, you will probably need to cut.

no big deal though, you just get an exacto knife, trim plastic away until it fits... you may not even need to actually puncture the ventilation system, but if you do, just use duct tape.

I'm talking about Kicker KS56, not Kappa... With the spec I show you, do you think it will fit better than the kappa?

I realize that, but look, your kicker specs are very close to those kappa plates...

honestly, just buy the speakers from a reputable place that will let you return them if they don't fit...

problem solved.

I think you will need to modify to get them to fit, but it would be worth it....
