Box with in a box?

Hey, I have an '83 TA with just a cheap jensen deck. its just somthing that i had in an other older car and decided its a lot better than a casset deck.

anyway, the problem is that you really can't hear anything over the exhaust on the highway. so, just to hear the tunes i have to turn it up so high that it distorts - not good. i have lots of buddys who are into audio stuff and they gave me a quick crash lesson and told me to check out a certain shop. i did.

so, i was talking to the guy and he said that Kicker was the top of the line and he was going to cut me a pretty good deal. all i can really afford is one sub and an amp. now, he was going to sell me just a regular box with a 12" sub. he put it right inside the "trunk" area(the actually storeage area, not the flat part) so that you couldn't see the sub at all, he said that this setup would actaully work a lot better because it would act as a box inside a box.

My question is, is Kicker any good? and is there any truth to what he told me?

BTW, from what i remember it was a CVR sub 12", and a 450(ish) RMS amp.
thanks.

I'm by no means an audio buff but kicker is one of the well known companies for good subs.

ya kicker is one of the better companies. They won best Sound quality and best SPL or something in a comp last year.

However. Subs arent gonna do everything for you. You need to start thinking about a better head unit. (one with a preout for the subwoofer.) And think about upgrading your stock speakers..

If all you're trying to do is get enough sound to overcome your exhaust, adding a sub and amp really isn't the way to go.

As others said, a new head unit is in order. New speakers would probably be a bigger benefit to you right now as well instead of a sub and amp.

I agree. Spend the money on a decent deck and a couple good speakers. If all you get is a sub and amp, you will have bass with the same distorted mids and highs you are living with now.

If you want a little bass, try getting some better 6x9's in the sail panels in addition to the aftermarket 4x6's. Is by no means a replacement for a sub, but it will help fill the sound in the interm.

I hope this helps.

All good ideas, the speakers in there now are older after market speakers of an un-known nature. there not bad, but not the best either. they do produce some bass, but not what i'm looking for.

I do agree with you about my head unit, it is kinda shady. I'll go talk to the guy today about. thanks alot.

is the distortion you get in the bass range, or the higher frequencies?

sounds to me like you need a real amp, along with some real 4x6s/6x9s
