Best Subwoofer Break-In tracks...

As I have to break-in my new L7's, I've been listening to a variety of music and I think I nominate:

·Coal Chamber - First

as the best metal track to break-in subs with. Half the song is a detuned bass guitar moving through a few low notes. Lets you hear how the subs are doing without a plethora of mids & highs to mask the true sound of the subs.

Also, I've given the new L7's about 5 hours of break-in so far and they sound SO much better than when they were first fired up. When I first powered them on, I thought something was wrong because they would onyl play one note! Now, they're beginning to track through all the bass notes as they break-in.

Ummm.....

The best 'break-in' (I assume you mean testing) CD would be the one that has all the different hertz per track.

Track 1, 10Hz
Track 2, 11Hz
etc etc

I could generate sine waves to test with, but I'm checking for suggestions on actual music that can be used to break the sub in while in the car. I should have done this overnight in a free-air environment before the install, but...whatever...

Thank you, Bass Mechanik, thats what I was looking for, I stared at the screen for like 5 minutes before I finally posted without their name, lol

And I've never heard of 'breaking in' a subwoofer. In fact mine went right through the entire scale as soon as I fired em up, pulled hard everywhere from 22hz to 90 something, then tapered off....damn weak 6x9s

I'd never had to break on in before, but I popped these L7's in and immediately noticed something wasn't right. I did a quick internet search to find that I missed the little two line disclaimer in the L7 install guide which states that they need to be broken in. Searching on TGO shows a lot of people who've melted the voice coils due to not breaking them in. The suspension is REALLY TIGHT when brand new and I guess the voice coil former needs to move a decent amount at high powers to dissipate the extra heat. Just a thought...

Isnt it a really bad idea to run tones through a sub?

If they're clean I don't see why...I'd bet a lot of home-made tones would be distorted.

yeah the l7s are picky about that it can take a while to get them good and limber....im thinking about hooking them up free air for break in also and turning my amp wayyyyyy down mabey even just using a 100 watt. home stereo reciever for the first few hours to get em goin. then putting them in and slowly letting them adjust cause id hate to burn up the voice coils.

I just put em in and Bang em, if they break I take em back and get something else.

Stuff that breaks because you didnt break it in, come on......

I work under the rule of thumb: Break it in like your going to drive it.

I believe etronics states that you must return the product to Kicker for warranty service instead of swapping it out with them as you would an authorized distributor. In any case, these are 20lb drivers so shipping isn't really cheap even one way.
