4X6 speakers?

want to upgrade my front speakers and heard that some 4X6
will not fit. Who makes a decent speaker that will fit w/out mods?

In an 88 Camaro dash, almost any 4x6 on the market will fit. Fitment problems arise with firebirds or 90-newer Camaros.

No, I had some minor issues on the driver's side of my 86 Camaro. The Inifinity Kappa speaker's magnet would hit the plastic molding of the dash (it's different on each side). What I did was mount the speaker in the bracket and then lay the bracket down as the magnet hit the plastic. Two screws went in fine, and I just used washers under the bracket for the other two screws. The dash pad still fit nicely without hitting the surround.

I guess I overstated the ease in which stuff fits. Yes, you may not be able to secure all 4 screws with some designs, but they should fit underneath the dash pad without modification, which is good enough for a 4x6 anyway.

kinda a weird question, but does anyone have a pic of where the 4x6's go, without a 4x6 in, or with one in?

I'll explain before you guys think i'm an idiot. The guy who owned the car before me modified the dash pad for alternate speakers, and i'm guessing the actual mounting area as well, so I'm thinking that i'm either missing a piece, or it was cut off...?
I don't have any mounting screw holes, or area for them to be, and was hoping it was just a simple bracket I could grab from the wreckers...

in case you were curious, my car had a 5.25" rockford in the front right, and a rockford 3.5" in the left side. Also, the a pillars had holes drilled for JBL tweeters, one was in the left side, and the hole was in the right side

Driver's side with two screws in. The other two screws require washers under the bracket so it sits securely without bending anything.

The tweeters should be on the outside of the woofer rather than the inside, but the size and placement of the magnet simply didn't allow for this in the dash.

I put some 4X6 Alpines in mine about 2 weeks ago...they came from my cadillac deville.....

Passanger side went in with no problem at all...its the drivers side that needed the modding....

No biggy though....just use a dremel....well....because of the slope of the windshield I had to go out and buy a flex shaft for the dremel to fit it in the tight spot...but...its in and works awsome.

I found a set of those metal brackets, that hold the speakers, from the wreckers today. Those look like factory pieces for late 3rd gens (or only camaro's?), as my '82 has a different setup under the dashpad.
These won't fit.

I saw a firebird in the wreckers, with the stock speakers (looked like), that didn't use that bracket, and looked like mine, and only the back 2 screws were holding it in.... Is that normal?
Has anyone else had trouble fitting in aftermarket 4x6's in the front of a 3rd gen ? (those that didn't have that bracket that Cayse posted?)

I'm thinking i'll have to make a little plate out of ABS or something, not a big deal, but I was hoping there'd be an easier factory solution...

Thanks

82-89 Camaros should have no problems fitting the speakers.
90-92 Camaros and 85-92 Firebirds will be tight on the driver side and will require modification for some larger speakers.
I've never worked on a pre-85 Firebird so I can't comment.

Are the 4X6s really worth the money for a nice set? I helped a friend put some infinity reference I think in his Sonoma and they never impressed me. I also have a set of 4" infinity kappas I had in the dash of my mustang for a little while before I put in some cheap components and they never impressed me there either.

Are 6X9s in the rear a hassle at all as far as aftermarket?

6x9's have plenty of room for anything really. My aftermarket ones had the holes line up and everything...

my problem is that the front 4x6's don't have the mounting holes line up at all, or even have anything to screw down into, and with the windshield there, I can't really modify easily...

You should have no problem getting at least 2 screw holes to line up, which is plenty. It's not like you're getting an air-tight seal anyway, so as long as they don't move around you're pretty much all set.

I'll take a pic to show what I mean, but I can only get one hole to line up...?
I'll post a few snapshots tonight.

ok, here we go:

https://webdisk.ucalgary.ca/~jmknopp..._html/speaker/

There are a few snapshots.
The speakers don't have multiple choice mounting holes, only 4 holes. I can't bring the speakers far enough back to line up with the 2 rear holes (spacing left to right isn't right, as well as the speedo head is in the way of the magnet), and the front two holes are wayyy off.

See what I mean? Is there a piece missing there? The original speakers weren't in the car when I got the car, there was some bastardized 3.5"/5.25" combo in.... So I have no idea what it *should* look like.
I think i'll try some 1/8" ABS or something, and make a mount, but boy it'd be easier if there was a stock piece that i'm missing...

Thanks!

yeah, try making that adapter. That should do the trick for you.

I have a pair of Pioneer 4X6 in the dash of my Jimmy. They sound clean and are relatively inexpensive. The factory S-series dash tweaters('97 and later I believe)actually angle the speaker into the passenger compartment. But I don't know if the F-body's dash has the room for them. It's very tight on both sides in my Jimmy but on second gen S-series the speaker grill screws also secure the front part of the speaker.
