Info: How to buy a Subwoofer

Well, I've got my 3rd article ready to post, except that this one wound up being very long (23 pages!!), so I'm not going to piece it into a half-dozen threads, instead I'd hoped to just post the .doc file, but apparently those type of files can't be posted.

Anyway, here's a link to the article that I temporarily hosted on my website. It'll be up until this thread dies off:

EDITED. SEE BELOW

For those of you brave enough (or interrested enough) to read it all, please provide your feedback, along with any questions here. My goal, just like with the first two, is to get feedback here so that I can clean it up and make a series of tech-articles to post on the website.

EDIT:
The doc file has been replaced with an official tech article on iroczone.com:
http://www.iroczone.com/technical/Subwoofer/

superb article.I did some EE stuff in school till my head started to hurt from all the equations.Your article cleared up a few grey areas that that I had always wondered about.Like how Bose and some of these companies get sub bass out of such small enclosures, which by your article I can see now that they are using ported enclosures. For example the infamous firebird "performance sound" B piller sub woofer assys.I always wondered how they did anything at all.Now I can see that they were cheating to a massive degree with ported enclosures.Safe to say they had some pretty narrow frequency response. Thanks for the article, nice piece of work.

Bose has another trick up their sleeve, and I think it has a lot to do with huge amounts of 2nd harmonic distortion in their speakers. Having a bass driver with a lot of 2nd harmonic distortion can give a very realistic perception of having more bass than you really do. The 2nd harmonic distortion thing is also the premise around the Maxxbass module thing that's starting to grow in popularity.

Looks like I've got my self some one note wonders

Next subs I get will have MUCH more research into them.

EXCELLENT subwoofer information.

The only way to get a true IB installation in your car is to cut a hole in your roof and mount the sub to it so that the rear chamber is the entire free world. Don’t laugh, I’ve seen it.
I've got me some roof fabrication to do

Very good article but maybe a wee bit too technical for someone just looking to buy a subwoofer

Maybe start off with box variations, etc and then get into the more heavy duty stuff like Vas, Qts, etc.

Thanks for the suggestion. I may take another look at how I've organized the contents.

I didn't read it all yet but from what I've read it was very informative. It does is a bit above the general curve for most people (on this board anyway) but for someone such as myself I wish when i was getting into car audio I could have found something as complete as the articles that you have written. Its like the mr wizard of car audio, not only are you saying what things do but WHY they do it.

Coming from a very experienced mobile electronics installer... GREAT Atricle! My next subwoofer setup will be a single JL 10W7 on a JL 1000/1 amp, I can't wait to get started on the new project... just a tone of other things that must be done first
