indash dvd screen, got one? show pics!

Just looking to see if anyones got indash dvd screens/players installed in their rides.. I'm considering getting an Alpine IVA-310 and I am curious about fitment issues, viewablility, etc.

So post some pics and lets see what you got, and more importantly, where you put it!

Jim's the only one that has one center mount - check out his cardomain page or do a search. Someone else put one where the on dash glove box goes.

Had one in my last two cars. Definitely the worst car audio investment I made.

Just a couple of reasons
I had it for a total of 2 years, used it maybe 3 times to watch movies.
Had a good friend that was killed on the highway because he was trying to watch a movie while going to spring break.
People are doing more and more in thier cars which take away from thier attention to the road, do they need another?
I own a laptop, I can do much more with a bigger screen for less than what is normally paid for an in-dash.
The controls, especially on a touch screen, are akward and difficult to use quickly to control simple things like volume.
In a third-gen I can only imagine how many times you would end up punching it by accident.
Passengers that i had in the car while driving that were watching something normally ended up with a massive headache or puking because of motion sickness.
In dashes are a cool concept until you shell out $1800.00 for something that has to stay in your car, that is illegal to use completely, breaks easily, says "steal me", and can kill you.
IMO in-dashes are for kids(ricers) and traveling salesmen. I would definitely ask around and see what PEOPLE WHO OWN/HAVE OWNED think of thiers.

There really isn't much point. I have found mine to be fairly entertaining, though I don't use it much.

It's great at car shows. It always draws a crowd. I also put it on when my fiance and I go for a ride, because she likes to watch something. For me, my sole reason for wanting it was because there are a lot of concert DVDs that I like to listen to, and this makes it easy to do that.

Jim I agree with the dvda's and sacd reason. I am actually looking to put in a separate player for that purpose only. I am amazed at how inexpensive the din DVD players have gotten.

a friend of a guy in my carclub had one in his car. he used it so the opening theme of knightrider would play whenver he turned his car on. funny thing was it was in a 300 dollar subaru, the deck runs 1800. it was a kenwood. too much bread for me... i could make some awsome upgrades to my engine for 1800

I'm not aware of very much stuff that can play DVDA or SACD, but what few I've seen that can do one or the other is far beyond my price range. My dvd player plays just the DVD layer of a DVD-A, just like any DVD player can do.

Back before I realized that all of my good ideas actually take time to impliment, I had it in my head that I was going to modify a home DVDA/SACD player and cram it into my dash, but I've come to the realization that I'll never have the time to do that.

My Alpine IVA-W200 plays DVD-A discs, not sure about SACDs though.

I bought it not for the video aspect, that's just a bonus, but because of all the add on options. For instance, iPod control is much better and easier with a large touch screen display vs a standard DIN headunit display.

hee hee. well Ia am not really running an indash DVD like that, but I am putting a Carputer in. PIII 1.5G with 40G hd, 1G ram. running Media Engine. Mainly because I dont like Talk radio at all, cant stand advertisements, adn I am tired of scratching the hell outta my CD's. So I rip them onto my Crputers HD as MP3's and run it that way. Plus Ill soon be getting a GPS antenna and that willl make trips a bit easier. as ar as DVD's go... Not really. I hav my whole system out of the car right now, as I just sold my Dodge Stealth it was in and havent gotten t installed in my RS just yet. Ill post pics of it once it is done in a couple weeks.

Very cool. I hadn't seen that new model yet.

Now that I look around, I see the DVA-9861 plays DVD-A also. Now if they can just make one that's affordable.

Yeah this wasn't cheap, but less expensive than the ones with NAV, which for another $500 wasn't worth it to me. I have this, Alpine PXA-H701 being shipped out today.
Now if I can figure out where to mount a center speaker life will be good.

I have one in my Malibu, Clarion 765VD. I love it.I actually find it very easy to use, and control the audio functions. I had movies playing constantly when I first put it in, but then that faded and occationally throw a movie, I mostly just listen to it.

As far as being able to kill you, anything in the car could do that, the cigarette lighter could and has done that to people, because they can't drive and light a smoke at the same time without problems, and many other things that are both OEM installed and aftermarket. It comes down to the ability and the driver and the way it is used. Anybody who actually tries to watch a movie while driving should have thier license revoked.

I bought it off ebay a while back. It will by no means be a stock fit though since this is a double din one. I've ditched the fourth gen console for something custom. I am building the console to extend up to the base of the ac vents. Despite this extra area to play with, I still may have to cut into the dash slightly to get everything the way I want it. I just ordered some e-dead v4 to help eliminate all that unwanted noise. Once it arrives my install will begin and I'll post pleanty of pictures... Josh.

Hi All,

In my "Z" I didn't like the monitor being in the center, as it was to far away when viewing, for such a small screen. So I mounted Twin LCD Visor Screens. Now the 7 1/2"" screens are only 1'-0" away when viewing. Plus when the detachable face plate is removed, and the visors are up, the unit doesn't look like it's a DVD. I have approx. $200.00 invested in this setup. The head unit is a DVD/ MP3/CD/CD-R.RW/TV/Am-Fm. It was on eBay, and my bid was the only one at the starting price of $59.99 (lucked out on a $299.00 unit). Again on eBay I purchased the twin visors for $139.50. These were fairly inexpensive, but work flawlessly. I thought to my self about this install, and didn't want to put out big bucks on a system that I didn't know if i was going to use it that much. Besides I could always up-grade later if this combo didn't perform. I also needed to know if I would use the system, and liked the DVD's. The first weekend after the install my girlfriend, and I went to an older abandoned Drive-in-movie. We parked among the few weeds, and watched King Kong at the drive-in - That was a kick.

i thought it'd be nice to have a flip down mounted under the center 2 vents so it wouldnt be in the way of the heater\ac controls... only prob is to get an in-dash dvd player or track down a flipdown w/ built in player (nvr seen one of these)... i would want the latter...

dash pocket monitor

Here is where I installed mine. I use the LCD all the time. Instead of playing CD's, I downloaded all the videos and burned VCD's to keep my passengers entertained. The LCD is also used for the Atari 2600.

I just sold this car, and am doing the same set up in my other TA. Also I am installing a rear view camera to show on the LCD.

OK so even by myself, driving around in the Jeep, I still use the dvd player a lot, especially for music videos, and since I do a ton of driving, especially for basketball, I have to say I do watch movies, plus it's kinda cool. I will be putting one in my TA once it gets done, if that day ever comes, so I like them. But ya I was also wondering, since no one seemed to answer, I dont think, did anyone have any problems with the fitment? Does the screen fold up enough so that you can actually watch it? I know in the Grand Cherokee I had to make up a custom dash plate to make it stick out an inch or two because of how the dash hangs over.

I had no fitment problems although it does help that the screen will tilt at many angles. I can imagine that if it just sat at a 90* angle to the actual headunit there would be problems especially with viewing the screen.

but if WE like them can WE have them? I use mine for Nav, among other things. I have full internet, whichis good since when I go to work I am stuck on the compound for 3 days at a time. so I use my car for net access and to watch the occasional mivie while off duty but stuck as Rapid Response.

I dont have a pic, but I have a Pioneer AVIC N-1 in my 94 F-150 ext cab flareside. It has GPS navigation, which is sweet. It plays DVD's Mp3's and I have an XM tuner with it. I also installed the rear view camera. It has outputs for a rear monitor and rear sound, with a rear remote. Also has auxillary A/V input for a playstation and such. There is an IPOD adaptor available for it, but I don't have one for it yet. I plan on adding the 6 disc DVD changer soon. I havn't taken any pics yet because I am in mid process of building a custom console to hold 2 Blaupunkt DVC 8's which I will power from a Denon 4x100 amp.

The player is definately distracting, it takes dicipline not to get wrapped up in whats playing while you drive down the road. I prefer concert DVD's that way I can listen while others watch. I have had a Primus DVD in it for a few months now lol. I use the XM much more than I do the DVD feature.

After I add the DVD changer and my rear monitor (which I am mounting in the console) I will be able have the GPS navigation running and play a DVD or use the Playstation at the same time.

Where are you installing your rear camera in the Camaro? I just bought one and am looking for the best place to put it, I'm thinking at the top of the license plate?

In the first sentence there, it says the system is installed in my ford pickup.

But if I were to install it in the camaro, I would put it under the brake light on the rear window. (91 maro) or I would mount it under the hatch, above the liscense plate, but if you did not have a power hatch, that would not be an option. Also if you mounted it above the liscense plate that would render it useless as a clevage cam
