Front/Rear passenger-side speaker smack

Hello gang -

I have an '89 RS with the stock head unit/casette player and stock speakers. The driver's side sounds fine, but I'm getting some nasty crackling in the passenger's side front and rear. I've checked wiring, removed the stock unit and checked that the harnesses are clipped in tight, to no avail.

I don't think it's a problem with the speakers or the wiring. I'm thinking this is a problem with the stock stereo and it's time to get an updated HU w/ a CD/MP3/WMA receiver, just wondered if anyone else has run across anything like this.

if it's the same static in the front and rear, then chances are it's somewhere in the pre-amp stages before it's split and sent to the individual amplifiers. In other words, the head unit is crap.

It is indeed the same static in front and rear. Thanks for confirming my suspicions.

Final question - I was looking in the Crutchfield on-line catalog, and it has a slightly different harness piece if I have a Bose system. There is no "Bose" signage anywhere in my car, just an "ERS - Extended Range System" logo. Would it be obvious of this was a factory Bose-option system?

yes. the car would have kick panel speakers, and a speaker panel across the rear well in the hatch.

My 87 IROC that was originally equipped with a Bose system, actually had a complete wire harness for the stock non Bose set up as well as that just wasn't plugged in to anything.

Probably not a Bose car. The cheap ones said ERS.
