Honestly, the parts make a difference, but the biggest sound factor is where the subs are located and how the box is made. A good ported box with ****ty subs hit the same as good subs in a crap box. so find a decent brand like Audiobahn, JL, Kenwood for your subs, but a decent 600wt amp from audiobahn, mtx, and compliment the rest of the system with some pioneer 6x9s and 4in tweeters.
Personally i like Pioneer. relatively cheap, sounds great, has a warranty. Sony Xplods are common and can be had pretty cheap. sounds good also.
My system
sony Xplod headunit with adjustable everything
Pioneer 4in tweeters in the dash
Pioneer 6x9s in the 1/4 panels
2 Audiobahn subs in a custom box
Pyramid 600wt amp (JL amp blew up). Even with the so so amp, it hits damn hard. A 1200 watt amp would do wonders. I keep breaking trim pieces

I have made numerous amounts of boxes for my hatch and i found that fiberglass works the best. Even though it is VERY time consuming, it was worth it when I finished. I've thrown together some MDF boxes and a few hours and they sounded blah. Just make sure whatever box you make to make sure it is completely air-tight if you didnt already know.
Also for speakers, a picked up a beautiful pair of JL 6x9 speakers for the back for 50 bucks off of my friend, an absolute steal. And I recently constructed a pair of custom kick panels out of fiberglass and stuck Boston 6 1/2" speakers in there. The sound quality is much improved from the 4x6 bostons i had before in the top of the dash. I have alot of pictures and the dimensions for the sub box and the kick panels if you need them. Send me a PM if you need any help.

There are alot of great sounding speakers in the world.
Some of the better quality ones include Eclipse, Infinity, MB Quart and JL Audio. there are a ton of other great brands, Boston, Polk, you just need to shop for what your budget will allow.
I am putting Eclipse 4x6's and 6x9's in my car they friggin rock. I will link the speakers I am going to use in my car. Tho I am not getting them from Circuit City.
4x6 link
6x9 link
The MB Quart speakers probably sound as good as any other speaker I have ever heard, but they tend to be a bit pricy.
Let us know what you end up getting, and good luck.

well i just posted my pics of the subs/amp b/c you asked for pics of everyone's setup but i guess im the only one that did lol.
but your asking about sound its all what sounds good to you.. this is my first car thus my first system. i have pioneer 4x6's and pyle (lol yes pyle) 6x9's with bass blockers on every speakers, and my system sounds good to me and everyone else that rides in it. i usually get compliments on it all the time. the subs and amp are the huge part of my stereo though. but thats what i wanted loud bass and alot of it. now i know that my regular speakers arent even close to the best but it satisfies me and thats all that matters.

Everyone will tell you that kick panles are the best for sound quality and pair it up with a couple subs to have a real good system. I never could afford kicks and just replaced the factory speakers and added a couple subs. I was happy with it. As for brands, I like alpine for the price and quality. I plan on doing a full type r system in my 98 in the next year or so and thats my suggetsion. Something new that came up recently is the 5.25 dash conversion. Would not sound as good as custom kicks but will still sound good.
Matter of fact, I'm selling type r 6x9 and 5.25 speakers as we speak

i have front 4x6 clarion and rear 6x9 clarions they have clarity up to a pretty high volume WITHOUT an amp. my sub is a single 12" kicker L5 that creates more than enough bass which is powered by my audiobahn A8000T amp which is 800 watts rms good amp for the price. all in all i love it but wish i could get some kick panels i just dont have the time to make them like my box.
