Hey guys, those set ups are tight, I still have the AC-Delco tape player
One of these days after I finish school, maybe I will have a killer deck like you all have.
One of these days after I finish school, maybe I will have a killer deck like you all have. I bought it last year about a week after I bought the IROC. The factory tape player kept chewing up my tapes. (Yes, I still have tapes
)
I picked it up for $600 cash (Canadian) from a friend of a friend who works at a really high-end A/V shop. He actually owns the place and gave it to me at his cost. Retail (back then) was something like $850.
It's a JVC KD-AVX1. The first head to hit the market with duel 5V outputs. Dolby Digital and DTS decoders. 96kHz 24-bit D/A converters. Plays DVD's/MP3/WMA and GIGA MP3's (translation: MP3's on a dvd. It's nice to listen to 500+ songs on one disc
) and obviously, the built in screen.
The main reason for buying it was it's enormouse amount of flexability (you can all kinds of neet things like hook up a bumper-cam and see what's behind you on the screen) and it's tunability. All the sound adjustments can be a bit intimidating for a novice but you can tune every last frequency to your hearts content.
I'm happy with it.
(Oh and in case you're wondering, yes, it can play movies while you drive....)
They actually just released

luckily they finally came out with the AVX2... it kicks some serious a$$...

Im getting ready to buy the AVX1 unit also it runs about 325-375 now online. What quirks have you seen, I wonder if I should wait and get the AVX2 when the price drops.
As far as "quirks" after thinking about it, I guess there are some things that could be considered "quirks" but they never really bothered me.
For instance, you cannot forward/rewind MP3's. You can only skip forward/back a complete song. That's not really a big issue with me because I rarely (if ever) feel the need to forward or rewind a song in the middle of it. If I want to hear a song again, I'll just skip right back to the beginning of it when it's done. This is only with MP3's mind you. You can can still forward/rewind songs in WMA and regualr CD's.
The second thing that may be considered a "quirk" is a slight pause after you've just used the volume key.
For example, say you incrase/decrase the volume, the volume number appears on the screen and stays there for about 2 seconds so if you adjust the volume and press, say, the "menue" button right afterwards, the menue screen wont appear until those 2 seconds are up.
Again, I don't consider either of these two "quirks" to be anything that would break the deal on such an awesome head-unit, but they might be for others.
Check and see what features the new model has. You may want to go with that one instead.

The AVX2 fixes both of the things that LT1FUN mentioned, plus the new unit supposedly supports FULL DVD discs of mp3s... not just 4.7GB like the AVX1.
plus they centered the screen, which IMO looks much better...
people complained of weak sound controls on the first, lack of screen savers/visualizations, poor remote design... etc... I mean, don't get me wrong, it's not a horrible deck, but for the price, you could get something of audiophile-grade that lacked the DVD 'screen'...
you also can't browse through the mp3 disc without pausing playback... so I hear... but I can't confirm if the AVX2 fixes that or not...
truly, as bad as the name sounds, the Jensen $700 full-screen motorized DVD headunit is a FAR SUPERIOR device... the Ipod interface is, ironically, one of the best as well... if I was in the market for some cheap-o DVD player (which is essentially what the goal is of the AVX*,) I'd potentially check out those new Jensens... hell they are even touchscreen...
oh yeah, FYI... the main reason I PERSONALLY didn't get the AVX1, (I was seriously considering it,) was because the damn radio doesn't even remember where you were in a song when you turn off your car... it starts the song over... every time... I mean, these things don't make the unit worthless, but wow, that sure could get annoying...
that's why there are other decks out there for similar prices and features that don't have as many drawbacks.... the AVX2 is a significant improvment in both looks and performance, and many of these design flaws have been fixed...

That's the "touch-screen" deck... it uses thermal resistance and you push on the plastic casing on the outside to push the 'buttons'...
one thing I can say, is it takes some getting used to, but other than that, it's a sound deck... I believe it has the "G-Drive" cd mechanism... helps out with high-SPL... correct me if I'm wrong

Installed my Sirius Sportster in the Trans Am the other day. I finally got around to taking pictures.

I hope you like that Sirius setup... because to me, it sounds horrible!! I have a bunch of friends that really like it, so I tried it in my car, but with the expensive tuner that directly-connects to my Pioneer deck.... sounds really 'tinny' and shallow... missing a lot of the high-end frequencies... apparently some people are VERY unreceptive to those frequencies, so it doesn't bother them... but I'm the kind of person that can hear a TV just being on (the capacitor inside,) from usually anywhere in the house, within reason...
what do you think of it so far?

..
Please explain. I haven't experienced anything out of the ordinary since I bought the unit.
