well just to start..i got a 1605D amp for my kicker L7 a 15"...and i had it hooked up and dang it was thumpin great...and i stopped and hung out in the house for a couple hours and realized i had my sub wired for 2 Ohm load and not 1 like i wanted..so i went and re wired it and thumped..its like 17 degrees out...and i wasnt really pushin it and.....it suddenly stopped...no fuse blown or anything..protect light didnt go on either..checked it with one of those voltage deals..forgot what it was called..power comin in the amp...not coming out....lights on and everything...did i bust it..?

 

Is that amp able to go down to 1 ohm? How did you wire the sub?
Have you tried hooking the subs back up the way you had it before?

 

something in my mind just tells me the hifonic amp is not stable in 1 ohm operation so you might wanna just junk that **** and buy a better amp and wire it to an appropriate ohm load that it can except.

 

it is stable at 1ohm.. lot of hifonics amps are.. hifonics really isnt that bad, of course they only put out about 80% of the watts they claim, but they're decent amps

 

Can't have a sub that will run at 2 ohms and 1 ohm, its not possible you either have dual 2 ohm vc's that will give you 1 ohm wired in parallel, or dual 4 ohm that will give you 2 ohm in parallel. I don't know hi fonics well but your amp may have a fuse on the output side like a d2-take off the cover and look for an automotive type fuse like the one in your dash.

fuse didnt blow or anything....you could tell the fuses were hot tho and yes its stable for 1 ohm...i got it from ikesound and the controls were already worn on it like someone else had it already!!! gotta get ahold of them and send it back!.........o yeah i first had the sub hooked up like comin from the amp and to the box from the box it went 1 positive to one coil and 1 neg to the other...and the strap in between...which worked fine for me before..and then i had 1 pos. and split that to both coils..and the same with the neg.

 

is your l7 2ohm dvc?

 

No, you can't. 1 speaker with dual 4 ohm vc's in parallel is 2 ohm, series is 8 ohm. Those are your two options

I'm not talking about the ones on the outside, some amps have a fuse mounted on the inside right before the outputs. not many do, but something to check.

The 1605D is a pile of ****... that's why it stopped.

They claim 1605 RMS watts... yeah... right...

either way, my friend's 1605D stopped dead in it's tracks, similar to the way yours did. He used it for a good 5 months before he decided to wire it to 1ohm instead of 2ohm. Lasted about a month.

pre-2005 Hifonics is OKAY, but anything after is worse than sony xplod...

 

eh...false alarm guys..had a wire come off of the back of the speaker box terminal!! WTF..so its fine....sounds damn good too

 

i completely disagree with you scrapmaker.. from what ive heard pre 2005 is about 70% efficeient(rated at 1000, puts out 700 etc.) and the newer ones put out 80%, but ive seen a lot use the 1606d, and a lot were satisfied.. did they really stop making that?

 

Those amps are just noisy as hell... high rate-of-return... many defects...

if it works for you, more power to ya... I'd lose sleep if I ever recommended a Hifonics Brutus amplifier to someone though...

 

i agree that they arent the best.. obviously from the percentage of power output.. but some people have said for a somewhat budget amplifier it does the job.. ive never had one but its what i heard.. i'm most likely wrong

 

Yeah the older ones were okay... like the 1500D... but now you're seriously better off getting a nINE.1 or something... I'll honestly probably never buy another amp without eD's logo on it... it was CHEAPER than the 1605D, put out more power, looks better, with a higher build quality.... it would be silly to take a Hifonics over that...

 

I agree. I won't buy much of anything new ampwise anymore. I look on ebay and take my chances with the pre 2000 stuff. I just bought a Phoenix gold MPS2240 amp. Rated at 24 watts per channel at 12 volt 4 ohms. It is amazing. The amp we are building around is a Hifonics ISIS that I have owned for like 13years or so. Rated at 50X2 into 4 ohm at 12 volts. Its stable to 1/2 ohm. and we are running it mixed mono with 14 speakers when we are done in the 91 TA. Does anybody other than Zapco make their own stuff anymore?

 

Man I haven't heard of th MPS2240 for a long time! Everybod used to have Pheonix or Precision Power back in my teenage days. I've seen some pretty wild setups with Pheonix(1/4 or 1/2 ohm loads) and using stuff like the JLw6's would be pushing 15+ drivers.
If you don't mind my asking, what you get the MPS2240 for? They were $600 new IIRC. 2240 was only stable to 2ohm, right?

 

No the MPS2240 was stable to 1/2 ohm. Same amp as the MS275 but stable to lower impedances. The MS 275 was stable to 2ohm mono so 1 ohm stereo all day long. One of the first systems I ever put in had the MPS2240. I ran it as a single amp system so the guy could compete in the 0-50 watt class.I picked this tidbit up for 157 bucks plus shipping. All under 190 bucks. I just received it today and hooked it up this morning to make sure it powered on and at least produced some sound.I am making my boy do the wiring so that he learns I watch justonemoreamp on ebay. He finds some of the best "old school" amps around. I even saw a US Amps VLX 400 for like a grand. Last I saw Orion HCCA's and PPI plus all the old ones from "the day". True sound quality amps.

 

They don't make them like they used to.
A guy I knew in Bradenton, FL (MAD MARK) had a Surburban with 36 12"subs in it and he ran "750" watts (we know it was more like 5,000) with all Pheonix.
I think he did some sick numbers like 140db! He held the record for (I think) 1994-1996. He was also famous with his Cadillac Hurse (had the "bowling ball paint job) which had 16 - 15" drivers and that car hit somewhere in the high 130's. I've been out of that loop for a while now, but Im glad to see some of those quality units floating around.

 

if you hook up one coil reverse from the other you will get nothing try reversing one side

 

I have an OLD Soundstream 6 channel (Granite 180.6) it's 12 years old and still going strong. When It dies I'm putting my Reference 604 and Reference 500 in the car.
