Monsoon CD Decks

Hello I have a 1991 Formula. I'm sick of the ugly face plates for aftermarket radios... my current one sticks out almost an inch and it's horrible. I have done a search here and see folks talking about Monsoon CD decks from later year Firebirds/Camaros. Do they fit without a lot of modifications? I am going to have to bring this to a place to be installed and don't really want them drilling into my dashboard if it can be helped. Thanks!!

i've got one in my garage and I need to change out the cage for my Kenwood (using an alpine one from my old deck temporarilly) so if I do that today, i'll see how well the Monsoon deck fits.

Yes it will fit w/out any major modifications or drilling. The only thing I had to do when installing mine was to trim the mounting ear on the driver side of the monsoon deck a little. The stock harness plugs right in. Don't pay anyone else to install it, it's easy to do yourself.

Lots of people have done it, I think it looks better than most of the aftermarket stereos out there. Here is a link on how to do it. Enjoy.

I can't argue it looks nice but my Pioneer 1.5 din fits perfectly without mods and does look good.

Re: Monsoon CD Decks

I realize this is an old post, but I have had some issues that prevented me from revisiting this Anyway, I called GM to see what model number I needed, and the parts department said you can't put a Monsoon deck in unless it's the same model that came with the car, or the radio won't power up. Do I have to unlock it somehow? Thanks and sorry to dig up an old post!!

Oh and is that Pioneer a DEHP77Dh? Maybe I will look at that as well I really just want to get rid of the eyesore on my dash now with a decent CD player. Thanks!!

Old post, but I wanted to point out that you (or anyone) doesn't have to settle for the Walmart radio kits that have the extension.

There is a flush iso-din kit made by Scosche, it's part number is GM1500B. You can opt to use the supplied trim ring (as pictured) or your factory trim ring.

You just need to trim off the support bracket at the rear of the radio pod in our birds. Kit works for Camaro too.

I got mine on eBay for about $17 shipped.
