Maybe Got Screwed on ebay, not sure. Help Please

After much time and consideration, I decided to go with Infinity Kappa perfect 12.1d subs for my camaro. I then set out to purchase some amps. I decided to go with alpine mrp-350 Producing 350 watts rms which also happens to be the rms wattage of the kappa perfects. The guy i bought from on ebay sent me "this years model" which is the alpine mrp-450, producing 400 watts rms.

My question is, does an amp only reach its rms rating after you crank the gain all the way up? Will i have a problem hooking up an amp that is 50 watts rms over the subs rms wattage?

Any help is appreciated.

So your Amp puts out 350W RMS and the Sub can take 400W RMS?

Shouldn't be a problem, just be a little conservative when you crank up the volume and turn it down at any sign of distortion, the ill effects (clipping) of underdriving a sub can be worse than overdriving it if you're not careful.

I know many people would scoff at me, but my 10" sub is rated to 350W and I'm only pushing 150W RMS to it right now... it can get loud enough to go past my comfort level while in the car without distortion and that's all that matters really... some day I'll probably get an amp just for the woofer.

Due to the different recording levels, it's preferable to have an amp that produces more clean power than the rated power of the speakers....

With this setup, you can truly reach the the rated power with clean power, as opposed to an amp of matching / lower power that will start to distort before your speakers rms ratting...

If you're getting new speakers, givem a few weeks to break in too...

When you set your gains, they are to protect your speakers... if you turn them up and you can distort 70 percent of what you play on your stereo (which means 100 percent when your friend or girl borrows the car) your asking for new speakers soon... set the gain right once, and don't let the volume **** cause distortion... then you get to enjoy your stereo for a long time.

thanks guys for the answers. and in response to chillcat, my amp puts out 400, and my subs take 350.

so far it looks like i'm in a good place right now with a slightly more powerful amp.

Ahh... I re-read it, yeah that sounds just about perfect, most sound guys would probably agree that slightly overdriving a sub is exactly the way to go.
