my sony head unit is DEAD, what a surprise
well, i go to listen to a cd today, and put it in, the cd player sits there for awhile and then beeps at me and says error... it wont play a cd anymore.
its a sony xplod cdxf7715x with 4 volt pre outs , high and low pass filters and all the bells and whistles, cost me $270 after tax a little over a year and a half ago. up until now i have had no complaints with this thing, great sound and functionality.
luckily because its one of sony's "Premium Series" it has a 2 year manufacturer warranty instead of a normal 1 year and my local stereo shop seems pretty willing to get things set straight. ill have to wait and see when i bring it in.
up till today i thoought what everyone says about sony was wrong or only applied to cheap models, i was wrong lol.. this blows.
anyone have an idea of what it is exactly that took a dump with this thing? also, when i take it in, will they have to ship it out to sony and leave me with no tunes? i wonder if its too late to try and get something different.. probably. anyway , my rant is done.

I stopped buying sony stuff a quite a few years ago... they use to make some good amps xm 4020's and stuff, but then it all started to break.. head units, home stuff, etc...
I would agree, the alipine decks are better, but a few years ago, look inside, all sony chips and stuff

Some shops will exchange then up front and sell the unit they get back as an open box unit with a discount. But not many.

You have current running through the chassis any time the car is running or anything is turned on.

Good chance the optical lens is probably just dirty. Take a q tip, dip it in rubbing alcohol, and clean off the lense with the q tip.
If you have it under warranty, don't take it apart to get to the optical lens. I'm just putting this info out there for other people who are no longer under warranty.

i took the top cover of the head unit off and looked inside, everything including the eye is spotless so i dunno what the problem is. maybe its out of alignment or something. but anyway i put it back together, plugged it in, and it works! so i guess ill run it for awhile and see if it goes out again; if so ill send it in.

Re: my sony head unit is DEAD, what a surprise
I must just be one lucky guy. I've had a cheapo Sony HU for almost 5 years now, been working great. One time my daughter put 76 cents worth of change in it and I couldn't figure out wtf was wrong with it until I took it apart after a week of no tunes cause it wouldn't play CD's. Opened it up, shook all the change out, and resumed my normal life.
This thing has gotten countless hours of usage, (playing CD's the whole time, I can't even remember when I last listened to the radio) been in and out of 4 cars, and outlasted 2 subs and an amp. And it cost me 99 bucks brand new. lol

Re: my sony head unit is DEAD, what a surprise
Ive heard a lot of BS about sony stuff, but didnt think any of it was true. However, I bought some 4x6 speakers for my dash, sony xplods. These speakers can't handle crap and are 4 ways supposed to be badass. I had 2 way pioneers in my old 89 RS that worked much better than these. It must be true. Sony makes great stuff, but not when it comes to car audio

Re: my sony head unit is DEAD, what a surprise
my sony headunit does all kinds of crazy things, but it plays cd's and it was 15$ off a buddy 3 years ago.
usually R&R of the cd fixes 95% of my problems.
wouldn't mind a nice deck someday, but i need some paint...

I had a whole Sony setup in my wife's car a few years ago. Had nothing but problems with that crap. I will never touch Sony's car stereo equipment.
