Re: front speaker size

It depends on what you've got. I've got an 88 Camaro on which I used some Pioneer 4X6 plate speakers(two separate speakers on a 4x6 plate). They sound much better than the stockers. I've also got an 89 Firebird. I tried to use the same type of plate speaker on that one but the A/C duct won't allow them to fit with the larger magnet plus it's off set so it hits the duct. The only way to make it fit would be to remove the duct. So instead, I used a 4x6 coaxial speaker with the same size magnet but the magnet is in the center on that one. Nothing bigger than 4x6 will fit in there.

You could rotate the speaker so that the tweeters are toward the center of teh dash, not the prefered way to do it, but when it has to be done, it has to be done.

Sometimes using some heat from a heat gun on the offending duct work and then reshaping it is also an option.

As said 4x6" speakers are the largest that will fit in teh stock location.

Good idea about reshaping the duct with the heat. I wouldnt've though to do that.

Re: front speaker size

i havent took the dash off yet but i have a 92 firebird it has ac so the reshaping might be an option
, im thinking of doing round 6's in the dash and then another set of round 6's in the door and then more 6's and silk tweets were the 6x9's are then 2 more above were the rear setbealts are then put the tweets in theplastic bar that is on the rear of the headliner and 2 15 diamond d6's in a ported box that sound stage sould sound nice, any thoughts?

Re: front speaker size

I know the 6" speakers will fit in the rear deck where the 6x9's would go. I've seen it done with some separates sitting in a 6x9 bracket. I'm not sure if a 6" speaker will fit under your dash. I've never tried it. If you've got power windows then I don't think you can install any speakers in the door. I've got some Polk audio separates with a 5 1/4", a mid range and a tweeter and the guy that installed them told me that it was a good thing that I had manual windows because they don't fit in cars with power windows.

Re: front speaker size

WHoa, slow down.

Audio is one place where more is not always better.

Choose ONE location (I guess a pair actually LOL), to install speakers, either dash OR doors, but not both. There will be phasing issues and frequency responce changes at each location due to on and off axis listening positions, along with the bad things that windows do to sound when it is reflected.

In the rear again, choose ONE location, or as I prefer none at all. Take the money you would spend on all those pairs of speakers and put it all into one really good pair for the front, installed in a good location, kick panel being a better choice yet, and even better put a decent amp on them.

Sound was produced in Stereo, not quadra-phonic (save the DVD-audio discussions for another thread LOL).

There is a time and place and reson for rear speakers, and that is for ambiance, to make th elistening environment sound larger, but doesn't work real well in a thirdgen. Moving the speakers farther back, using only midbass drivers and attenuating them will produce the best results.

I prefer installing door speakers in a power window third gen, since that area at the lower part of the door is completly flat, and open to creativity, when it comes to door pods.

Re: front speaker size

yes 4x6 speakers are factory,a 3 1/5 plate will work as already said before, you cold cut the duct and tape it up. the kickpanels are are best for sound imaging, it makes the sound coming at you more equal length. invest on a high end component set. i have done some stereo comps, and have had help from the best, custom audio concepts.the sail panels, here you need something, also called rear fill, a mid bass driver only, then a sub or subs in the back

Re: front speaker size

i have crank windows so the lower door option would seem like the best bet for me cus i broke my left ankle 2 times so the floor kick is out of the question
, i want a really loud and clear setup and the front of the car seems to be limited in locations and size of speaker that can be used
so i thougth of running front channels in the rear for more power.

and as for components i was thinking of running either mb quarts or diamond im leaning more twards the diamonds ive heard the d6 series on a orion amp and they sounded beautiful and there not to badly priced and for the woofers i was plaing onf goign wiht the d6 15's with hifonics or diamond amps ive heard bolth and they bolth souded great but i want to run the same brand amps so they look nice in the amp rack
