Why is my sound quality poor?

Back before I knew anything about car audio I bought some 60W RMS front speakers and 100W RMS speakers for the rear (both audiobahns) and they obviously sounded terrible with the stock radio unit.
I started looking for a four channel amp, but was told by friends that I didn't need an amp and that a nice aftermarket unit is all I need since I have no subs. I bought a Pioneer player and although the sound quality definitely improved, it still sounds like garbage above low volume levels.

Do I need an amp afterall or is something wrong?
If I need an amp, how big? I did a search in the forum and have read that I don't want an amp with an RMS output equal to my speakers as it would damage them, but my CD player is putting out 20 RMs and really didn't help much.

Thanks

Get an amp and some subs and you will be happier.

get a good amp, head unit amps are low power high distortion. Don't expect much from the audiobahn speakers either (they are a show speaker not a sound speaker)
