Ok here we go again since i can't figure out how to POST lol.. i bought a 91 Convertible Trans Am. the antenna won't go down.. it goes up but i have to help it down.. i bought a new replacement antenna from GM thinking it went bad.. Installed the new one and the SAME,, wont go down.. WTF"? please help me out as it's driving me crazy.

Did the replacement come with a new mast or did you just install a new motor? I am not sure, but I thought the motor used a flexible strip to pull the mast down. If you just replaced the motor, the problem may be in the mast portion.

 

It's a complete new unit and it does the same thing the old unit does, Goes up but won't go down.. i just don't get it,. is there a Relay? between the radio and the antenna i don't know about?

 

There is a relay. It is under the dash on the passenger side. I am sorry I don't have more info. Perhaps you will be able to here it clicking. It should be cheap to replace.

 

MAN you are a god send i do hear a clicking under the dash when i shut the radio off.. Trust me i will find it lol.. Thank you so much..

 

I just hope it fixes it. Post your findings.

On a side note - what do you use to "lube" the antenna?

 

IT's brand new ! i haven't had to lube it yet. it's not dirty or anything..

 

Ok i found the relay switch, it's just below the map pocket underneath the panel that says Performance suspension. 3 bolts hold it down. remove the bolts and it's right behind it.. All i did was smacked it with a screwdriver head and it started working lol.. Quick fix.. the Antenna goes up and down now.. Thanks for the help BINGO..

Glad to hear it is fixed. It is only a matter of time before it goes out completely. It is amazing how fixing the little things can be so satisfying.

 

I checked out my owner's manual and it stated to periodically wipe down a fully extended antenna with mineral spirits the apply a very light sewing machine oil. I used "3 in 1"
