Delco loc - unable to get the code

Hello

I've been searching the message board but found nothing. I have an 89 GTA with the steering wheel controls for the radio that do not work (the assembly under the wheel with the contacts is just worn out). I know that there is a chance to get the unlock code for the radio but first I have to get the code from the radio that is then somehow (ebay) translated to the unlock code. I've been trying to push the preset buttons - several combinations including 1-4, 2-3 - but the radio is just saying LOC all the time, no change or anything. I even tried to disconnect the steeering wheel controls but still no result. The radio is with a cassette player.

What can I do to get the code? The car is in Prague which is central Europe, a bit far from any authorised Pontiac dealer ;-)

Any help will help.

And sorry for my poor english.

Re: Delco loc - unable to get the code

Thanx, but my problem is that I can not get the code from the radio - pressing buttons 2 and 3 for ten seconds does not work...

Re: Delco loc - unable to get the code

Some guy told me that there is some chance to get the unlock code from the VIN or serial number of the radio. Is that true?

Re: Delco loc - unable to get the code

Do all the buttons work correctly??If you have tried too many times you will need to hook up a battery charger( just so the battery wont die) and leave the key on for 1 hour. Then try to retreive the code. Usually it will say SEC if you have done it too many times but other times it wont.

Re: Delco loc - unable to get the code

Just take it to GM they reset the unlock code for 45 bucks. If there is a chance it's never had a personal code entered into it GM sets the code as 0001 when they are new. But like others have said radio goes into sleep mode if you have to many failed attempts.

Re: Delco loc - unable to get the code

Well, nothing helped, but I have to thank you for your time anyway. The best thing may be to repair the connectors to the steering wheel controls - But I will need the part with the pins (these pins have to touch a ring under the wheel but mine have faulty springs so they just do not work). I've been searching rockauto, summit and so on but found nothing. Is this part available somewhere? It does not seem to be repairable since the thing is just topo plastic and small ;-))

any help will help and thanx again!

Re: Delco loc - unable to get the code

The solution for me would be part number tw-63 by Standard Motor Products. This should connect the steering wheel controls to the radio again and that should mean automatic unlocking of the radio. Rockauto sells this little thing for $136...

Re: Delco loc - unable to get the code

I have a 89 GTA and had this issue when I purchased it. The dealer could not fix it; they told me that the only way was to have a working steering wheel pad and press the mute button. Mine, I have found, works intermittently and I happened to get lucky one morning when I just randomly pushed the Mute button and the loc display turned into the clock. There have been, and may be a few, of these pads for sale here in classifieds or may find on evilbay.

Just checked my owners manual and it states in the manual that that radio will not work without the steering wheel controls and the mute button is the only way from the dark side.....sorry.

Re: Delco loc - unable to get the code

This does not work for the GTA radios; believe me, I tried everything, the key sequences that are referred to in the other thread do not work for our radios. Must have a working steering column pad....sorry, but that is the way it is for the GTA radio.

Agreed, nothing will unlock the radio except the mute button on the steering wheel. Been there, done that.

I have never seen the connectors of my radio so I just do not know. All I know is that there are 4 or 5 pins on the wire from the pad that connect to the steering column thing... That's all I know, sorry... :-(
