how much base?

How much base can the back glass take befor it breaks? Im looking at puting 2 dub audio 400rms 12" subs in 85 Trans am. I already have a dub 500x2rms channel amp, and looking into getting audiobahn capacitor. Will the back glass hold?(dubs made by audiobahn)

Re: how much base?

i got 2 JL 12" W6V2 and they got 400rms and my back window is just fine... its tempered glass... its not cheap flimsy glass.
You won't break anything don't worry. Turn them up and listen to your car rattle... i mean bump

Re: how much base?

the glass will not break on our cars with out some insane speakers. Our driver/passenger window will release preasure and so will the cabin vents. My Fiero when I had 18 speakers it would push the windows out to release preasure because the vents couln't handle anymore air flow. Now with out the pressure you will need something like 160+dB and in which case you will not be in the car for that and you will have no back seats to accomodate for the box needed for that in our little cars.

Re: how much base?

I saw some idiot with a MTX Sledgehammer in a camaro and it didn't break the hatch window when all the windows were up. Don't worry. You'll be okay.

Re: how much base?

Hatch windows are very strong, I would be supprised if you would, intentionally of course, break one by hitting it dead on with a hammer.

Anyway's, to shatter glass via pitch resonance takes a precise note held exactly at the specified Hz for the thickness of the glass for a specified period of time per thickness. If I had to guess, and I am no physics expert by any means, I would say about 35 to 40 KHz (probably more) would be needed to shatter a hatch window by strictly sound resonance.

I assume you are talking about the brute force the subwoofer puts out when it "hits" a note. Like I said earlier, I think you would be lucky to break a hatch window via a brute attack with nothing less then a hammer.

A consiterable place to start worrying about the brute "hit" is probably when you hit the 1500+ RMS wattage subwoofers. But even then, I would consider it far fetched at that. I have however seen a W7 tear a poorly made, sealed, subwoofer box apart with nothing more than compression from the sub its self.

Hope I might have helped.

Re: how much base?

ive had friends with 5000+rms pumping in the back (2 audiobahn AWT series 18 inch subs) and the glass didnt break. i wouldnt worry too much about it.

its extremely loud high frequencies that can break glass, not low.
