amp for speakers. How much wire?
I currently bought a JL 300/4 (4 channel) amp that I am going to be hooking up to 4 speakers.
Alpine type R 6x9 (RMS Power Capacity: 100W) Peak 300W
Alpine type S 4x6 (Max RMS Power Capacity: 45) Peak 140W
My Headunit puts out 50x4. Alpine HU
Just wondering Hope much Wire I really need. 100 feet? What Gauge?
And also how would it sound? Big difference with the extra 25W to each?
I doubt I will be using wire that is linked together all fancy with a + and -. I will be taking wire from my work which just has single spools of anywhere from like 18 gauge to 8 gauge wire. I am pretty sure 18 should be more then enough or even smaller maybe for that small amount of power but just want to be safe

Re: amp for speakers. How much wire?
for your mids and highs, its not near as important to have really thick wire. what we used to do in my old shop is run i think 16g from the amp to the factory wires. so basically it would go like this......
take the speaker outputs from the amp, and crimp them to the factory speaker wires behind the HU. this bypassing the wires coming from the alpine harness. then run your rca's back obviously.
your HU says 50wX4, but is honestly putting out maybe 14w per channel. so having the true power from you amp will be a HUGE difference.
NOW....if you want to run all new speaker wires through the dash...then maybe go with a 12g. and you're probably looking at an 8 foot run from back to front, plus an up....so plan on about 20 feet for your fronts, and for the rear....(im assuming you're mounting your amp near the rear of the car)...you probably only need at max 6 ft per side.
good luck man.....you bought a great setup!

Re: amp for speakers. How much wire?
so 20ft x 4 and 6ft x 4 = 100ft basically of wire.
I am mounting the amp at the rear.
I am probably going to run totally new wire through the dash. Its a lot of wire and it might get a little confusing but I should be fine. I got lots of time this week as long as the weather doesn't get crappy on me.
Thanks for the quick reply. Hope it sounds as good as you say it will
Also I finally finished my problem with my subs not grounding properly so I gotta get this in
Hopefully get it all wrapped up this week and take some pics finally. Its gonna be a little messy because I got nowhere to hide the wiring since I am not going to rip my carpet up anytime soon. O well it still will pound and be loud as hell. I HOPE!

Re: amp for speakers. How much wire?
you must be running single wire to each lead. i personally would twist it. if you can, use a black and white, or however you want to distinguish +&-.
if you have your cables stretched out, and next to each other, put one end in your bench vise, and for the other side, grab your cordless drill. the chuck should be big enough to fit your cables into. then slowly run the drill until the wires are tightly twisted.
*disclaimer* lol....this will probably not stay if you're using cheap, soft wire, but if it has some density to the outer, it should work great.
keep on truckin!!
cant wait to see pics bro

Re: amp for speakers. How much wire?
Thats a great idea. I was thinking about twisting them like that or just sap strapping them every so many inches but that sounds like a better idea.
Hopefully I don't get confused and mix the wires up and junk. Almost did with my subs lol but lucky I wrote down a little dumby note on the box for myself. (all wires are red for my sub box hard to know which was what)
The wire isn't soft so I should have no problems twisting with that technique.
