Re: Double Din Head unit used? Who has put in a double din?

I have a pioneer double din AVIC radio/nav system in my
Camaro. It needed a little cutting of the stock cover plate, but not too bad.
I think it came out great. I'll get pictures if you're interested.

Heres a couple more if you want them. Didnt take too much work to get it to fit. Just some fab work and time.

You can just fold it down when you want to change the heat/AC? and then move it back up could you not?

Cutting, fabrication etc. You'll have to shave out a good portion of the dash because IIRC stock is 1.5 DIN, then you'll have to Fab up brackets to attatch to the head unit and then the car to keep it in the dash its possible and I've done it at work before, I charged the guy more than I would ever pay for it and that was with a big break in labor it can turn out good or like craaaaaaaap lol

Possible, not simple

i never thought a double din would fit in the thirdgens! that is pretty sweet, wouldnt put one in but still pretty cool that i could with a little fabrication

hopefully some enterprising person will start manufacturing some faceplates to make double din radios look stock.

Re: Double Din Head unit used? Who has put in a double din?

that would be a nice idea, but I don't know how standard the faces of those things are.

some kind of attaching bracket would be sweet. I love the look of factory radios, and hate single DIN units, but I have to admit these things look freaking sweet

Yes, But with a flip up... the less movement the screen makes the longer it will last. Even the On/Off - Up/Down of just starting the car or killing it when you get where youre going is alot of wear and tear once you think of it. if your going to go screen its best to go double din in my opinion. i ran a jensen flip up for a couple years when they first came out and it was nice to have then, but i think they are geared more for cars who want a screen but dont have the room for a double din.

I'd be more worried about opening clearance, and Jensen units aren't that great in the first place, the way it opens puts alot of drag on the gears and cheap Chinese parts die quick I have yanked plenty of them for repair, personally if you went flip out I'd go with kenwoods excellon series, or you can cut for a DD

Re: Double Din Head unit used? Who has put in a double din?

With the 7" i had no clearence problems at all. As for the brand, Jensen really isnt that bad... i won countless bass comps with jesen aginst Kicker,JL and RF. i think back in 2000' the head unit i had was arround 600$ A great quality systems starts at the head unit for sure, some people ive ran across love the way Roadmaster's sound so i guess its all in the eyes of the Beer Holder lol.

Re: Double Din Head unit used? Who has put in a double din?

ya i had a buddie who had a dodge ram extended cab, we took out the back seat and we built a 'stage' if thats what u want to call it and had it all carpeted and lookin nice, then we made a custom box and put 4 12in pioneers in it, pushin 800rms a peice ran 2 1500 watt amps and it wasnt that great. MOSTLY because he had a cheap head unit from walmart. me and my brother both tryed to convince him to get a better head unit but he wouldnt do it. took countless people telling him it sounded like crap before he upgraded

Re: Double Din Head unit used? Who has put in a double din?

84ws689bird - I'm tackling this next. What is the Pioneer Double Din model number? And what do we need to purchase to make the GPS work, play DVDs on the move, is there a back-up camera? etc?

There are aftermarket companies that make the installation kit for the Double Dins for like $35ish bones.

Re: Double Din Head unit used? Who has put in a double din?

I may pull the trigger on a Double-DIN Pioneer AVHP1400DVD this weekend or real soon. I did quite a bit of research. This unit is new for 2012 and the most cost effective route (I think?) for a quality product with great reviews.

Depending on how crazy or "pimp" you want your 3rd gen this is what I found.

Best Buy:

Pioneer AVH-P1400DVD (2 DIN Stereo) $299

Pioneer AVIC-U220 (GPS Receiver) $399

Pioneer GEX-P920XM (SiriusXM Satellite Tuner) $99

Pioneer GEX-P20HD (HD-radio tuner) $99

On CheapBay I found the stereo for $250, GPS for $320, SiriusXM tuner for $90 and HD tuner for $90 but not sure if I trust buying electronics out of someone's trunk. There are also bootleg GPS/SiriusXM/HD-tuners going for $20ish dollars, really don't know if I trust those, not quite sure they are technically legal, probably out of China, where there are no copyright laws - I didn't do much research on them. There is a back-up camera available too. A Brake-by-pass harness is needed in order to watch DVDs while on the move for around $10. Not sure I'd sit in a parking lot and watch movies...kinda creepy. I would want the capability to watch movies for my passenger while driving. Of course the bezel is around $35. I didn't even look at upgrading speakers, speaker wire, installing subs or amps. May just start out with the Head unit and bezel and go from there in the future. That's the breakdown I found.

Let me know what you guys think or if any of you have this set up.

Re: Double Din Head unit used? Who has put in a double din?

A bypass harness? Bahaha I'm totally in the wrong line of work pioneer needs a double pulse to ground on the e brake cable to trigger the video, kenwoods use a single ground pulse so you can tie a kenwoods brake wire to ground and enable video, pioneers you can use a simple on off switch, turn it on, turn it off, then on. Maybe I should start making harnesses I could make a killing lol

Another thing to consider about your add ons is you only have so much room back there, at best is say a sxm tuned add on will fit but that be box is bulky as help, you'd have to stash it by your ecm.

In my opinion pioneers are laggy and organized poorly. Kenwoods are easier to bypass, and easier to navigate the menus, plus they don't require huge add ons, theyre smaller and have more options available, the pioneers use a front usb with no rear option, if you use a Kenwood you can route your cables out of sight for a cleaner install and not run the risk of hitting your ipod cable or usb stick with your shifted because its hanging out on you

Just some food for thought.

Re: Double Din Head unit used? Who has put in a double din?

2 years of pro car audio has my mind going on all the things I can do in the car lol I've thought of a double din but I have my new alpine in all nice with my cables routes to the center console so I don't wanna tear it up, if you just wanna use ipod you can get a ddx(xxx) from kenwood, be it a Bluetooth or not and use a kcaip202 cable, you can also give the usb slack to be able to alternate between ipod and usb plus their Bluetooth add on is a tiny usb stick if you want to add it later it sits flush with the alot so its not in the way

Re: Double Din Head unit used? Who has put in a double din?

Use a dnx line Kenwood that says sirius-Xm ready, not sat ready it has to be the new 2012 tag, you can run a sxv100 I think that's the p/n, its a small sat piece that uses a din cord to link with the headunit and you just gotta plug your antenna in after running it, its roughly the size of a cell phone, easy to stash. If you want nav I'd get a totally built in unit, and an added plus to Kenwood is garmin navigation, no navtech crap

I went and messed with them at Best Buy this weekend. I like both Pioneer and Kenwood but for the money it just seemed like Pioneer offered more or the same options for less money.

You can play videos on it the way it is but you have to engage the handbrake. You can get a bypass to play videos anytime with that.

legally it has to be wired with the parking brake so you can't watch videos while driving but you can bypass that.

Check out this thread. Looks nice, but I still don't think I would pay 99 for it.
