Recommend a dash speaker for me?
Looking for a nice set of dash speakers for my camaro. No heat or A/C in the car so aside from keeping it below the dash pad what would be the best size? Ton of room behind the dash. I have an older set of JBL 6x9's in the back. Head unit I still have to get. I have the dash all apart for wiring upgrades so I would like to install the speakers now as I put it back together. I have the stock speaker mounts still in there but I can easily modify them or make new ones to fit what size? Not looking for super high end audio as this is a nice weather street/strip ride. I know zilch on audio though so I come to you...
No 4x6's as I put a few different set in my '86 T/A and never liked the sound of any of them.
Let's set a budget of $100? Can I get a nice speaker for that price?
And what size?

You can fit 6.5" shallow mount speakers in there, especially since you don't have the vents. I agree 4x6 are worthless. You can find some decent co-axials or components for around $100.

I just replaced my dash speakers with some 4x6 alpine type s speakers, personaly i think it sounds a million times better. My current setup is two 12" type s subs, 6x9, 5.25, and 4x6 type s's. I also have a alpine deck, for the $ i spent id say it was totally worth it

Re: Recommend a dash speaker for me?
I have some 4x6 infinity references in my dash. The trick is to amp them on a 4ch amp with your 6x9s. I honestly thought that they sounded bad before I put them on an amp. Without it you really just can't hear them.
Re: Recommend a dash speaker for me?
i am hoping that these will be in soon. i will be installing them in my 92 rs dash. ill let you know how they fit. they are the punch p142.

Plate Speaker

5.25" co-ax's
Image Dynamics

Boston Acoustics

Zapco

I'd go with the Polk Audio plate or the Boston Acoustics. The mounting depth of the Boston will fit nicely in the dash.

I'd be careful with the Bostons. In my car, I found 2" was the limit on mounting depth unless you want to do some serious hacking. Also it looks like the tweeter sits pretty high which may contact the dash pad.

Re: Recommend a dash speaker for me?
I got to find me a set too, after I replace the dash XD
-found out that kepping your music up high and then turning on your car and forgetting how loud it was will destroy a 20 year old speaker. not good

Re: Recommend a dash speaker for me?
well i finally got mine in. rockford fosgate P142. 4" round two ways. all i had to sand away on the passenger side were the mounting bracket fins and the ridge on top of the a/c vent tube. on the drivers side was the fins and some on both plastic brackets underneath. they sound great. oh yeah. the dust is gone from a good vacuuming.

Re: Recommend a dash speaker for me?
those are nice... I dont know how you got them to fit though! Just putting in the 4x6 kickers, they barely fit on the pass side... have to kind of wedge them in
Re: Recommend a dash speaker for me?
one the passenger side it was easy. if you look at the first couple a pics you can see thefins ground down. and only the ridge on the top of the a/c vent had to be removed. sanded it down with a die grinder and a sanding flapper wheel. the drivers side was a little more work. the piece behind the speedo and the front bracket needed to be sanded down. heck i actually had 1/4 inch space between the grills and the speakers.

i had some cheap sony 4x6's in the dash of my firebird and they sounded like crap then i found some cheap brand 4 inch speakers that had an adapter plate from a yard sale and they fit right in and the sound was clear and could be turned all the way up a friend of mine has the infinity kappa's and they sound amazing and they are around 80 bucks

Re: Recommend a dash speaker for me?
well i actually have a pair of kenwood 5x7's in my dash and they saound great.
for the price ur looking into there are alot of options for just one pair.
I personaly would recommend a pair of kenwoods 3ways for lower freq music i.e. bass and pioneer's for higher freq i.e. voice. i've had the both in my previous camaros and that's what I like for the dash. and they only cost around $45-$60 a pair.
