Re: Sail Panels

You shouldn't have to cut anything to get speakers into the sail panels, as these cars came with 6x9s (well, most of them) to begin with. Have you removed the sail panel covers yet? Some speakers may require you slightly enlarge the opening, but nothing major.

Re: Sail Panels

ya I removed the sail panel and all there is is the bare sheet metal no openings for the speakers to be put into, I think it's because that I had high end bose system that some of these cars came with from the factory.

Re: Sail Panels

i have seen some early thirds with base radio that had
a black plastic panel there instead of speakers-the
plastic panel was fairly thick(about 1/8"),so could use
as speaker mount after speaker hole cut in

Re: Sail Panels

Is the plastic trim panel solid or is there a steel panel bolted to the car under the trim? If it's just a plate bolted in you can get 6x9" mounting plates out of just about any other Camaro/Firebird and bolt them in.

My NOS panels came without any rear speaker cutouts but the plastic wasn't any thicker...just minus the cutout for the speaker opening and holes for the cloth sail panel to secure into.

Kinda like the clean look.

Re: Sail Panels

the base radio '82 i had seen did have the openings cut
out on the interior paneling and had the cloth sail panels
in place, but just had the black plastic blank-off panel
mounted with screws in place of the stamped steel
bracket that holds the 6x9s on the cars with better radio
so real easy to install 6x9s on cars that did not come
with sail speakers
never seen what bose cars have there though

Re: Sail Panels

If it were me, I'd pull the uncut panels and put them in storage, then pick up a set of junkyard panels that are already cut for rear speakers. Chances are you'll never want to go back, but if you do it'll be nearly impossible to find the solid panels.

Yes there would. The pass. side would be the easiest to remove (as the panel is smaller).

Up to you if you want to cut the openings or get a used panel and keep the ones you have.

The solid panel isn't rare but I don't run rear fill so it's not a big deal to me.
